Dear COE community,

I'm so excited to be engaging with you, our faculty and staff, as we continue our COE listening sessions. Last week we held a session geared toward tenure track faculty and Dianna Carrizales-Engelmann and continue our "grand tour" of listening with several upcoming sessions designed for faculty and staff (see below for specific employee groups). These listening sessions are an important opportunity to cultivate our community and invest in a positive climate. Further, it's important to make space for conversations that might not otherwise happen in the busy-ness of our day-to-day business. It's rewarding to hear from you and appreciate the time people are investing in the process.

Last week the Communication Disorders and Sciences program and HEDCO Clinic were showcased during Congresswoman Val Hoyle's first visit to the UO<https://around.uoregon.edu/content/congresswoman-applauds-uos-career-training-efforts> after being sworn in. It was such a fun visit, and I appreciated the conversation about workforce development and the need for specialized professions, including speech and language pathologists. I wish to extend a huge thanks to Betsy Boyd (Associate Vice President for Federal Affairs), McKay Sohlberg (Professor, CDS), Wendy Hadley (HEDCO Clinic Director), Jody Ferguson (HEDCO Clinic Manager) , and a handful of outstanding CDS students (Maddy, Hannah, and Ethan) for their thoughtful contributions to our discussion with the congresswoman. Although it was Val Hoyle's first visit to the COE, I'm certain it will not be the last! We share many important goals, including building and diversifying a sustainable pipeline of workforce to serve the community and contribute to society. I would be remiss if I didn't also acknowledge our colleagues at OHSU who partner with us in our audiology training and clinical care. The OHSU/COE/CDS partnership is strong and extremely rare and presents a wonderful opportunity for our students who take audiology courses, our students who train in the clinic, and our community members who seek clinical care through the specialized Marjorie Mitchell Audiology Lab.

I close with expressing my sincere appreciation for the excellent work our COE community engages in on a daily basis. Thanks to each one of you.

Warmly,
Laura Lee
