Dear COE community,

Our pace is quickening as we sit squarely in Week 4 of winter term. A quick review of the Updates and Upcoming and Reminders (below) provide a flavor of the activities our COE community is engaged in. I encourage you to attend Friday's colloquium with Dr. Joshuaa Allison-Burbank, an Indigenous scholar at Johns Hopkins University's Center on Indigenous Health , whose work focuses on language development in young children in Indigenous communities. I had a chance to visit with Dr. Allison-Burbank today and am excited to hear more about his research and impact in Indigenous communities. Thanks to Lillian Duran and Lauren Cycyk for organizing Dr. Allison-Burbank's visit to the COE!

I also wanted to flag a fun opportunity to join the campus community for a public conversation with Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, hosted by the CDS program. I appreciate the work of Karen Durany, and the whole CDS team, for organizing a wonderful visit and public conversation planned for February 6th. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, an NBA player and person who stutters, founded Change & Impact Inc. and will discuss the importance of speech language therapy and access on Monday evening 2/6. He is a strong advocate for the field and will be an engaging guest to have on campus!

These are but two highlights of intellectually stimulating and community-building opportunities to engage with your COE community members. If you're looking for something a bit more low key, come on out for Doughnuts for Ducks tomorrow!

Warmly,
Laura Lee

Updates and Upcoming:

  * Doughnuts for Ducks: Please join your friends and colleagues at the College of Education's Doughnuts for Ducks this Thursday, February 2nd from 10:30 am - Noon in the HEDCO Courtyard. Stop by, grab a Voodoo doughnut and a cup of coffee, and say hi!

  * Public conversation with Michael Kidd-Gilchrist: Join us on Monday, February 6 at 5pm for a public conversation with Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, NBA player, founder of Change & Impact Inc., and a person who stutters, as he visits the Communication Disorders and Sciences program! The event will highlight the role of speech therapy for people who stutter and the need for greater awareness and advocacy. See attached flyer for more information and contact cds at uoregon.edu<mailto:cds at uoregon.edu> for questions or to request accommodations.

  * Call for Scholarship Application Review Committee: The College of Education's Development Team is responsible for distributing almost $1 million of donor-funded scholarship annually to incoming and returning COE students who have applied for COE scholarships. To award scholarships based on academic merit, the College depends on a systematic review of these applications by a committee comprised of faculty and/or staff. Service on this committee counts as college-wide faculty service. And the commitment timeline is short - requiring the review of 30 to 40 brief applications over three weeks in the second half of February and into March. Please contact Andrea Olson, Director of Stewardship and Donor Relations at andreao at uoregon.edu<mailto:andreao at uoregon.edu> to express your interest in serving on this committee or to gain more information by February 10.

  * 2023 Sustainability Award Nominations: The Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation is seeking nominations for individuals or research teams for the 2023 Sustainability Awards<https://research.uoregon.edu/plan/find-funding/ovpri-internal-funding-opportunities#sustainability>. This award program aims to recognize individuals whose contributions deepen our culture of sustainability across a range of institutional activities. The OVPRI sponsors two of the Sustainability Awards: one for research and scholarship, and one for innovation. Award recipients will receive $500 in research funds ($1000 will be provided to a team), and will also be featured in a video produced by the Office of Sustainability. The nomination should contain a one-paragraph description of the nominee's contributions to sustainability in research and scholarship or innovation, along with the nominee's CV. If nominating a research team, please include CVs for all faculty team members. Preference is given to interdisciplinary environmental projects for the research and scholarship award. Please submit nominations (self-nominations are welcome and encouraged) via the online form<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/app.smartsheet.com/b/form/a53672fba0b0464f897513956d3303a4__;!!C5qS4YX3!Aa-7GSclgv8aqxjvF6GNsHHMSIGWM_GfZkE7G5xodzlUVmyQNOjhWAPg5BpxdOfKjj8NH1ebQiScxdO0$> by Monday, February 27, 2023.
