Dear COE Community,
Thank you for your many contributions to our programs, students, departments, and research and outreach units. I’m so grateful to be working alongside each of you. I had a chance to talk to our Board of Trustees earlier this week about the College of Education and was delighted to share your many accomplishments and impacts. Special thanks to all who contributed to our lunchtime breakout sessions with trustees (Anne Marie Mauricio, Wendy Hadley, Jasmine Ramirez-Miranda Jen Dody, Jen Meyer, John Seeley, Heather McClure, Leslie Leve, Zeni Colorado-Resa, Dianna Carrizales-Engelmann) as well as to Kent McIntosh who gave a research presentation to the Board.
I know this has been a busy term and the crisis of ongoing world events has been a challenging context for so many of us. I thank each of you for your engagement and commitment to our work in the College of Education and hope that each of you has a chance for some meaningful time away this winter break, even if it’s just for a few ways. The Weekly will be taking a few weeks off this winter break and will return on January 10, 2024. Look for it in the new year!
Warmest wishes,
Laura Lee

Spotlights and Accolades:
Partnership To Aid Native Language Literacy
University of Oregon researchers have secured a $5 million grant to develop literacy screening tools for elementary school students learning Alaska Indigenous languages. Led by Gina Biancarosa<https://education.uoregon.edu/directory/faculty/all/ginab>, the project involves collaborating with Alaska Native partners to align with the 2022 Alaska Reads Act<https://education.alaska.gov/akreads>. They'll start by focusing on languages with immersion programs, with the long-term goal of creating an online tool for literacy screening assessments in multiple Alaska Indigenous languages. This not only supports the state's goal of ensuring students read on grade level by third grade but also contributes to the revitalization of Native languages.
RaLiCaM Project Awarded the Spencer Foundation Racial Equity Research Grant
The "Racial literacy, capabilities, and curriculum-making" project, led by Principal Investigator Edward M. Olivos, has been awarded a Spencer Foundation Racial Equity Research Grant<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.spencer.org/grant_types/racial-equity-special-research-grants__;!!C5qS4YX3!GL6ulEt95BygZFv6DQNwWLX5CvpWwly3COJS4LNRSHodsN-i8tbNpohcwmJIjMSfTir9EyiWy0vHoX6MQr1I$> in the amount of $74,964. The RaLiCaM research project, running from 5/1/24 to 10/31/25, explores the impact of heightened racial literacy on curriculum-making practices in history and geography classes for grades 9-11. The collaboration with researchers from the University of San Diego and University College London Institute of Education aims to contribute to the understanding and addressing of racial inequality in education by shedding light on the crucial role teachers play in promoting emancipatory teaching.
