Dear COE community,

This is my first Weekly in my permanent dean role. It feels good to remove the "interim" from my title, in part because there is so much work to be done and I'm fully invested in the journey ahead of us. It is my distinct honor and joy to be able to work with you and for you. Now that the search is behind us, we can re-center our attention on the reasons we are here - our students, programs, research, and community partnerships. Remember your why; remember what brought you here and keeps you here, even when things are challenging.

This week the College of Education has held five community sessions focused on the UO IDEAL Climate Survey conducted last year. I appreciated the many TTF, career track faculty, GEs, classified staff, and OAs who have participated during these discussions. Your contributions make this work meaningful. Special thanks to Dianna Carrizales-Engelmann for her expert facilitation of these discussions. It continues to be a gift to work with you in this capacity. We are compiling our notes from these sessions, coupled with our yearlong community listening sessions, and will be convening with our DEI Committee next Friday to synthesize findings and identify key themes. In early to mid-May, unit directors will be facilitating discussions at the local department and research/outreach unit levels. Our goal is to identify one thing to focus on during the upcoming academic year to improve engagement and community.

Speaking of community, the College of Education has hosted several successful events that brought our COE together. I wish to give a shout out to Amy Harter for hosting a career fair for our UOTeach, Special Education, and Communication Disorders and Sciences students! This event was a huge success with a packed crowd at the Ford Alumni Center. Kudos to Lisa Fortin for organizing a wonderful faculty, student, and alumni reception at the AERA conference in Chicago last week. We had over 55 people turn up to the event. It was wonderful to see so many CSSE, SPED, Hedco Institute, and EMPL faculty, students, and alumni. Whether you were with us in Chicago or not, thank you for being a part of our community. I continue to learn from you as we grow together.

I'll sign off now by saying what a privilege it is to be the first woman dean of the College of Education at the University of Oregon. It's hard to believe that in 2023 I am the first, but it feels good to be in this space. Thank you all for your important contributions to our College and to your commitment to making this a place that is inclusive and welcoming to all.

Warmly,
Laura Lee
