Dear COE faculty and staff,

We are halfway through fall term. If this was an out-and-back marathon, we would be turning around and running to the finish. These running metaphors are sometimes helpful to me because our work in higher education does feel like an endurance event at times! We’re at the point in our race where we are tired, but we still have much ground to cover. Hang in there with me. We’ll get there. It helps to run with a friend. 😊

Our academic leadership recently came together to discuss a few ways that we can support transparency in our tenure and promotion processes, including intentional faculty development, clear discussion of our policies, and college-wide coordination across departments. I had a wonderful meeting this morning with the Acting Provost, Janet Woodruff-Borden, and she mentioned that there will be some campus-wide efforts to coordinate and support mentorship and faculty development. I would love our COE to be early adopters of central supports that will soon be made available. Based on the work of the university senate task force and work spearheaded by the Office of the Provost, we will also be prioritizing clearer expectations surrounding university/college/department service. Stay tuned…this is important work that will improve how we work together, support each other, and support our students.

I do feel energized when I get a chance to talk with our community partners, faculty, students, staff, alumni and donors who are dedicated to our work. Last week our advisory council came together and received fundraising updates, heard about our plans for a newly revised and overhauled Ed Leadership program, and heard updates about the College of Education priorities for the year. As you may recall, these priorities include: cultivating a sense of community and belonginess, recruitment and retention of faculty, improving student success through reducing equity gaps in key outcomes, and leveraging our research to drive change. I have a renewed sense of commitment to working with each of you on behalf of our college.

Please take a moment to reflect on our shared work in the COE – in both big and small ways, we all are difference makers. Reach out to your students, co-workers, colleagues and show your appreciation and gratitude. We are better together. Thanks for being a part of our community.

Warmly,
Laura Lee

Updates and Upcoming:

  * Survey of COE Professional Resources for course content: As you may recall from our October faculty and staff meeting, the COE is hoping to identify ways to expand certain student content offerings across the college by considering pooling access to resources and offering content to students across departments and programs. While there are several content areas that are likely to have cross-college appeal for COE students, at this time our focus is on content in the area of either (a) equity and inclusion or (b) higher education professional preparation (CV writing, developing concept papers, research skills). The Survey of COE Professional Resources (2022)<https://oregon.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3PpxjRMcX333Nky> located here is intended as an inventory of resources and interest, and does not obligate any faculty or staff at this time. Once an inventory of COE resources is compiled, we will use the information to identify a way forward -- with interest in considering opportunities for future quarters and to having a partially implemented option by Fall 2023. Interested faculty and staff, please complete by Monday November 14th, 2022.
