Dear Faculty and Staff,
What a year! As we wrap up the academic year, I wish to extend my deepest gratitude to faculty and staff who have so capably supported our students this year. Graduation is upon us and represents major milestones for our students (and for you – faculty and staff). Thank you for what you’ve done to create inclusive, supportive, and rigorous learning environments to prepare our students for their next steps in their professional or academic journeys.
This is the final issue of The Weekly for the academic year. For summer, The Monthly will be published in three issues in July, August, and September. Please continue to send any updates, upcoming activities, or accolades to me and copy Amanda Boehringer (amanda2 at uoregon.edu). We love to hear about what you’re up to, and we love having the chance to promote the work of our COE community.
Thanks for another great year, and congratulations to our graduates. See you Friday (for our final COE faculty/staff meeting), Saturday (at our COE New Beginnings Party) and Monday (at our COE graduation)!
Laura Lee

Writing circles begin the week of June 27 and will run through August. Click here<https://oregon.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_03rQG6YZ4ksIB4W> to sign up for a summer writing circle and email Lara Bovilsky (bovilsky at uoregon.edu<mailto:bovilsky at uoregon.edu>) with any questions.

Accolades:
* I am pleased to announce that the following career track faculty have received promotions: Jesse Berkey, Senior Research Assistant I, Jason Prideaux, Senior Research Assistant I, Lois Pribble, Senior Lecturer I, Alison Schmitke, Senior Lecturer II, and Heidi Von Ravensberg, Senior Research Associate II. Congratulations, to each of you, on your promotions and wishing you continued success.
* Two of our faculty received Outstanding Research Awards from the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation. Rhonda Nese was selected to receive the 2022 Outstanding Early Career Award, which is the UO’s highest award for early career faculty members to recognize and celebrate an emerging and significant record of scholarship and research on our campus. In addition, Beth Stormshak received the 2022 Innovation Award, which recognizes outstanding communication, policy outreach and other entrepreneurial or broader public engagement activity. https://around.uoregon.edu//content/2022-outstanding-research-award-winners-announced<https://around.uoregon.edu/content/2022-outstanding-research-award-winners-announced>
* Billie Jo Rodriguez and Angie Whalen were accepted into the UO Summer Teaching Institute. Billie Jo was accepted into the Access for All: UDL, Usability, & Inclusive Design pathway, which explores practices that create more accessible and inclusive classes for all students, particularly students with disabilities and/or neurodivergent students. Angie was accepted into the Hybrid Teaching pathway, where faculty redesign an existing course for hybrid delivery and participate in a faculty pilot where they explore and advance best practices in hybrid teaching at UO.
* Sarah Stapleton (with CAS faculty Katie Lynch) was awarded a 2022 Environmental Initiative seed funding award<https://around.uoregon.edu/content/environment-initiative-seed-funding-awards-announced?utm_source=ato06-07-22&utm_campaign=workplace> from the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation and the Environment Initiative for the project “Building Environmental Education Infrastructure at the UO.”
* One of our COE students, Trinh Le, received the Oregon Sylff Fellowship for International Research. The Sylff program aims to identify and nurture leaders who will overcome differences in nationality, language, ethnicity, religion, and political systems to tackle global issues, and whose high integrity and drive to address issues unique to their respective countries can make a real difference. Award recipients must be doctoral students who have matriculated at Portland State University, Oregon State University, and the University of Oregon who possess high potential for leadership in international affairs, in public life or private endeavor. In the words of one of her nominators:
“Ms. Le is proposing an important and ambitious cross-cultural study of family participation in the education of children in Vietnamese and Vietnamese American homes. She has done well in identifying an important research gap in understanding the cultural relevance and effectiveness of interventions with these populations. Such work is critical because it can serve to extend our understanding of how the term “evidence-based intervention” can also be relevant when implemented outside of English-speaking, European American families.”
* CSSE doctoral student, Presence O’Neal, was selected as a UO 22-23 Louise "Molly" Westling Distinguished Fellow<https://emu.uoregon.edu/environmental-justice-fellowship>. The purpose of the fellowship is to identify and support exceptional scholars who are interested in engaging in community-based projects in the fields of environmental humanities, environmental justice, and environmental literature. In her application, Presence successfully argued for the impact of doing some preliminary fieldwork and literature reviews for a research project that draws on posthumanist and feminist new materialist notions of agency to explore the relationships between youth, public school curricula, and environmental justice.
* The following COE students are winners of the 2022 Graduate Student Research Forum: Marielena McWhirter in the 3-Minute Thesis category, Merly Klaas, Havisha Khurana, and Mandi Ward in the Outstanding Posters category, and Yahaira Garcia in the 3-Minute Thesis People’s Choice category.
