Dear Faculty and Staff,

The future of scholarship assistance for our undergraduate and graduate students is very bright. Our donor community, which includes many of you, is allowing us to continue to set records each year. We provided $850,000 in donor-funded scholarship support for our students last year and are on a trajectory to award $1 Million this coming year. I am finishing an AAU college of education deans meeting in DC as I write this message. These meetings allow me to compare many aspects of our work to that of peer institutions. In the area of donor support for our students, faculty, and various initiatives, we have few peers. For the donors reading this message, I give you my heartful thanks on behalf of all of us.

Andrea Olson is key to our scholarship success. She manages our funds, stewards our donors, and supports our students at every stage of the scholarship process. Thanks, Andrea. The following message is from Andrea.

It’s scholarship application season. This is an important time for students as they look to secure funding for their academic studies. Whether students are applying for their program or returning to continue on their graduation path, funding from private donors is a great opportunity to ease financial burden and eliminate stress. The process is competitive, so make sure to let the students you teach or advise know of the application process. Andrea Olson will be holding a few information sessions over Zoom starting in mid-November. This is an opportunity for students to receive information on how to submit their applications and have any of their questions answered. Andrea is also available to meet with students by appointment and can be found in the Student Academic Services suite (130 HEDCO, andreao at uoregon.edu<mailto:andreao at uoregon.edu>).

  * From Dean Bruce Blonigen. The faculty and students in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) engage in important and innovative research, often supported by external grants. Please take a look at this report<https://cas.uoregon.edu/research-report> on external funding members of their college have secured (and the research projects they support) over the past two years (AY2019-20 and AY2020-21) – two record-breaking years that highlight these important contributions by CAS’ faculty to the University of Oregon. CAS has brought in more than $75 million per year during this time, with funding coming from the National Institutes of Health, the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Science Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and a host of other agencies and foundations. We are proud of the scope and depth of their sponsored research, which is spread across all three divisions of CAS (humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences), and features work ranging from the environment to social issues to cancer research to linguistics and literature. The report not only provides basic information on all external awards received, but also highlights some examples of this work that makes a difference in the lives of our community and beyond. Congratulations to our CAS colleagues on their influential work.
