Equity & Inclusion Committee Newsletter
This quarterly newsletter is intended to provide the COE community with regular updates about the work of the COE Equity and Inclusion committee. It also highlights the work that all our colleagues are engaged in towards our shared mission of inclusion and equity and towards the continuous improvement of our college’s climate.
Over the past year, the Equity and Inclusion committee has been systematically working through six (6) strategic focus areas intended to positively impact our college’s climate for students, faculty, and staff.

Over the past year, the Equity and Inclusion committee<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coediversityequityinclusion/committee-members/> has been systematically working through six (6) strategic focus areas intended to positively impact our college’sclimate for students, faculty, and staff.
While these are the areas that the committee will be focusing their immediate attention on to intentionally infuse equity and inclusion into our common practices within the college, this list does not represent the universe of areas that equity and inclusion shows up in the college. If you have an area of focus within the college that you are curious about, please contact Dianna Carrizales-Engelmann or your unit’s committee representativ<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coediversityequityinclusion/committee-members/>e to discuss where you see it fitting as part of the college’s strategic focus.

Our Affirmation
[https://files.constantcontact.com/e2afc7af701/f55833e0-fc0a-419a-b1fa-25be591e7cbd.jpg]
Institutions around the nation are adopting inclusive statements that actively position themselves and their members into the constantly expanding discourse around equity, inclusion, and social justice. Over the years, our college’s mission<https://education.uoregon.edu/about-us> has remained in alignment with equity-related goals and outcomes, however, as the discourse advances, we must keep pace with new knowledge in terms of its scope and urgency by ensuring that our mission also includes opportunities for introspection and self-reflection as a community. In keeping with this position, the COE Equity and Inclusion committee has adopted an affirmation<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coediversityequityinclusion/inclusivity-affirmation/> that captures the attitudes of individuals engaged in this work and that they believe aligns with the overall desire and intent of individuals throughout the COE community.
Members of the committee have already begun using this statement<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coediversityequityinclusion/inclusivity-affirmation/> in a variety of formats in their day to day work as a pledge, as a personal statement, a reminder, or a call to action. We are pleased to share it in the hope that it also resonates with others. We welcome all members of the COE community to use the statement in your classes, in meetings, as a post for your offices or any number of other collective ways that amplify your position and the intent behind your actions.
Equity and Inclusion
Professional Development in the COE
Thank you to the college community for voting towards the development of a program of professional development in the college. The results of our vote across 4 different potential models of Professional Development Delivery resulted in a slight preference for an Extended array of options. While the knowledge of the community’s preference for a specific model will allow the committee to focus on the implementation guidance necessary, it will not preclude us from identifying ways to incorporate the benefits of the other models. Your feedback as you responded to the vote will be useful for that work. More opportunities to weigh in on the development of our Professional Development Delivery will be forthcoming later this quarter. In the meantime, for those individuals interested in beginning to engage in discourse while we build our system, we are hosting a College of Education (COE) equity challenge.
College of Education Equity Challenge<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coediversityequityinclusion/college-of-education-equity-challenge/>
[https://files.constantcontact.com/e2afc7af701/1da1d6bb-7939-4043-8ae9-7c403a974bfb.png]
The COE Equity Challenge<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coediversityequityinclusion/college-of-education-equity-challenge/> is based off of an externally developed system, the Eddie Moore Junior 21-day challenge<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http:/www.21dayEquityChallenge.com__;!!C5qS4YX3!X0xIYusq1EDkusc5pXolQfDQS4kP6E7h-s5aO1oHP_WG_nmR_PJWGRY8vISsysA$> and the United Way Equity Challenge<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.unitedwaydm.org/equity-challenge__;!!C5qS4YX3!X0xIYusq1EDkusc5pXolQfDQS4kP6E7h-s5aO1oHP_WG_nmR_PJWGRY8y8RdqOQ$> that have been used to engage communities in discourse nationwide in recent years. The challenge is comprised of brief pre-curated readings, videos, and other engagement opportunities that allow participants to come together over shared topics in the area of equity and inclusion and to jointly process the material and what it raises for us using an intentional system of engagement.
The COE Equity Challenge<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coediversityequityinclusion/college-of-education-equity-challenge/> will run from November 8th to December 9th with opportunities for shared discourse scheduled to occur each Friday within that time. Final discourse will be held the week of December 13th, 2021.
Additional Opportunities to engage: As an alternate option, for those faculty or staff interested in engaging in more advanced or specific discourse around inclusive pedagogy and the incorporation of critical pedagogy into K-8 programming, Dr. Audrey Lucero<https://education.uoregon.edu/directory/faculty/all/alucero> has agreed to offer a discussion session on the topic of Critical Literacy Pedagogy for K-8 Educators if there is minimum* interest. (*Minimum sign-up of 4 – 6 COE community members). With gratitude to Dr. Lucero for making this opportunity available!

Fall Faculty Picks
Related in part to our interest in providing resources and in part to our interest in facilitating opportunities for professional development and discourse in the college, here is a list of advanced readings and resources shared by faculty members in the college on a variety of issues related to institutionalized racism, racism in data, and racism in research, immigration, and other system-level considerations related to equity, inclusion, racism, oppression that may be of interest to certain scholars or advanced learners in this area. If you have suggested readings that may be of interest to your colleagues in the COE community, please share them for our next newsletter.

The SOURCE<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/source/2020/02/20/home/> student group will continue this year. As with previous years, SOURCE meetings are advertised to all students in the college and are designed in support of students from typically underrepresented groups. Regular meetings occur based on student interest and need, and meeting objectives are designed to organically follow the needs of the students from group to group, quarter to quarter, year to year within the general themes such as:
· Navigating personal academic success in the college or program;
· Current and / or topical issues of the day;
· Timely issues related to social justice, heritage discussions;
· Preparing responses to college or community issues that require
comment or action.
Please watch for more information and updates about how interested faculty and staff can be involved in SOURCE meetings this quarter.
Additional Ways to Get Involved
Your Involvement
We will continue to look for ongoing opportunities to keep the community apprised of and involved in the momentum in these areas and welcome your feedback and input as we grow this together.
I Have a Suggestion!<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coediversityequityinclusion/i-have-a-suggestion/>
The COE is constantly looking for nimble tools, evidence-based activities and inclusive ideas to implement as we support these focus areas and other related work within the college. Please reach out to Dianna Carrizales-Engelmann<https://education.uoregon.edu/directory/faculty/all/dcarriza> at dcarriza at uoregon.edu<mailto:dcarriza at uoregon.edu> or to your unit’s committee member if you believe something you are working on in your department or program links to one of the strategic focus areas and warrants consideration for college-wide implementation.
Your Work
We would love to include and consider all of the work that you are each engaged in as we discuss and promote the work we are all engaged in. Please share your work with us for inclusion in a future newsletter.
