Dear Faculty and Staff,

Our Development Team is preparing for our semi-annual COE Advisory Council<https://education.uoregon.edu/coe-advisory-council> meeting this Friday. I will be giving my report, Kristi Schneider will provide her update, the group will meet and hear remarks from a UOTeach student, and Samantha Shune will share her latest research on swallowing problems of older adults.

Brady Nittmann provided many of the details for my report. He gave the Dean’s Management Team a compelling presentation about the personnel and budgetary status of the college last week. You may find some of the information to be equally interesting.

For example, our college has 754 (full-time FTE) employees. Since this figure represents FTE. The actual count of all employees is well over 900. We are the second largest employer at the university (College of Arts and Sciences has 2572 full-time FTE). We have more employees than Research (748), University Housing (594), and all other academic units (e.g., College of Business has 491).

Will still contribute 30% of the external funding awarded to the university last year. We generated $52.5 Million of the university total of $177 Million.

Bottom line: We are a highly productive group of staff and faculty. Thanks for doing your part to educate our students and create the leaders of tomorrow, make discoveries and create new knowledge, and directly improve the lives of children, youth, families and institutions through service and outreach. Nice work!

Randy

Accolades:

• Nancy Golden was featured in the COE Alumni newsletter on how she came to be the director of ORSN. “When deciding who to hire as the director, the dean couldn’t think of a better candidate than Nancy. “We were indeed fortunate to recruit Nancy Golden back to the college as our first professor of practice – a distinction awarded to professionals with an esteemed record of practice leadership and change. These qualifications are a perfect match for leading ORSN.” ORSN is guided by Oregon’s Equity Lens and currently focused on providing training for educators and instructional assistants in schools statewide. For example, Associate Professor Jeff Todahl from the COE’s Center for the Prevention of Abuse and Neglect (CPAN) is providing trauma-informed school systems in partnership with the South Coast ESD and the 10 districts they serve. Special education faculty member, Chris Knowles, is working with Lane ESD and Intermountain ESD to provide professional development to educational assistants. A signature piece of these trainings is the creation of specific video-based micro-professional development modules (‘micro-PD’). These are short videos where UO faculty train staff on evidence based skills using state-of -art technology. According to Dean Kamphaus, “Nancy, through ORSN, is leveraging the research eminence of the COE to drive positive change in practice around the state, in rural, coastal, and urban centers alike.” On the horizon, Nancy is looking forward to being able to provide ORSN’s trainings to more schools and developing meaningful partnerships statewide. She’s excited to see how they can further leverage their networks to make sure that children and educators are getting the resources they need. Nancy Says, “ORSN is committed to working side-by-side with ESDs, districts and schools to ensure that all students are graduates prepared for a bright and successful future and our partnerships have created the synergy to make this happen.”

• Gina Biancarosa is featured in this article of Dallas News<https://www.dallasnews.com/news/education/2021/05/07/how-can-a-one-minute-kindergarten-test-help-teachers-tackle-the-covid-slide/> on “How can a one-minute kindergarten test [DIBELS] help teachers tackle the ‘COVID slide”. Great work, Gina.

• Jeanne Nagayama Hall, EdF Undergraduate Field Experience Coordinator, will retire at the end of the term in June. For eighteen years, Jeanne has been a member of the Department of Education Studies. Jeanne’s teaching expertise, excellence in facilitating field experience, and advising/mentoring of students is widely recognized within our community and beyond. It is with joy that we celebrate Jeanne’s retirement and a tinge of sadness imagining EdF without her strong presence. Please join us for a Zoom open house on June 1st. Drop into the Zoom anytime between 4:00-5:00 pm to celebrate Jeanne’s stellar career and wish her well as she begins new adventures.
