Dear Faculty and Staff,
I write to you today with humility and far less eloquence than that contained in Provost Phillips’ message of 3:46 pm. I encourage you to read his email. His message calls upon us to act against racism and to commit to long-term anti-racist action. But what can we do today, April 14, 2021?
If you have not done so already, I encourage you to call one of our/your students and check on their well-being. This video<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSkbd6hRkXo>, by ninth grader Liv McNeil, provides a window into some of the most difficult feelings experienced by students during this challenging and tragic academic year. Please be forewarned, however, that this video contains content that may be upsetting to some viewers.
Thank you for all you’ve done to support our students during this academic year. Please consider reaching out to an individual student, one more time, and share your maturity, wisdom, and encouragement.
Regards,
Randy

Accolades:
* We are thrilled to announce that our own Lorna Porter (Ph.D. in Quantitative Research Methods in Education Candidate) is the recipient of the 2021-22 Lokey <https://gradschool.uoregon.edu/funding/awards/dissertation-research-fellowships> Doctoral Science Fellowship<https://gradschool.uoregon.edu/funding/awards/dissertation-research-fellowships>! Her nomination was reviewed by a committee of faculty, who evaluated her proposed dissertation research on An Examination of English Learner Policy Decisions and Impacts on Student Academic, Linguistic, and Engagement Outcomes as “…highly original, important, and coherent.” Lorna’s research explores how policy decisions impact the educational experiences and outcomes of multilingual students, students classified as English learners, and immigrant students. Her dissertation is a set of three articles, all focused on different state and local policy decisions that impact outcomes for students classified as English learners, including newcomer programs, state-level technical assistance and funding for districts with low English learner outcomes, and modeling decisions in estimating value-added for teachers of English learners. She has worked on research now published in outlets such as Review of Educational Research, Leadership and Policy in Schools, and education policy analysis archives. Congratulations, Lorna!
* A new blog post<https://ies.ed.gov/blogs/research/post/the-enduring-friendship-of-the-mocca-team-how-camaraderie-benefits-research> in Inside IES Research recently featured Gina Biancarosa and the Multiple-Choice Online Casual Comprehension Assessment (MOCCA) team and how their camaraderie benefits research. It is a heartwarming piece and reminds us all of the value of community and personal relationships in times of isolation.
