Dear Faculty and Staff,
There is considerable conversation on our campus and across the country about our gradual return to our pre-pandemic operations. On the one hand, it is clear that we are making progress and more progress is imminent. On the other, the lack of near- and long-term clarity will challenge our patience. I regret the latter. More information is forthcoming, daily, weekly, and monthly. For example, yesterday I discovered the section of our UO coronavirus website where I may register my vaccination. It’s at the bottom of this page https://coronavirus.uoregon.edu/vaccination-clinics <https://coronavirus.uoregon.edu/vaccination-clinics> .
In the absence of abundant certainty, I hope that you can take heart in the fact that we are making progress. I remain optimistic.
Regards,
Randy
Updates and Upcoming:
• DEI Resources: As we work collaboratively to build a more anti-oppressive campus, The Office of Equity and Inclusion is sharing the first edition of Justice Matters—a new DEI resource aimed at activating UO leaders around the themes of anti-oppression, justice, compassion and inclusion. In this message, they offer a few insights for addressing anti-Asian racism in ourselves and on our campus:
o Raise our own awareness and knowledge of the amazing diversity among Americans of Asian descent. As an entry point, review the five-part PBS series:https://www.pbs.org/weta/asian-americans/watch/
o Learn more about what anti-Asian harassment, discrimination and violence look and feel like. For example, sexual objectification of and violence against Asian women are critical components of Asian racialization in America, as are model minority stereotypes, perpetually-foreign micro-aggressions, and racial triangulation (just to name a few). Let’s acknowledge our own involvement in and complicity with Anti-Asian oppression, and commit to practices of fairness, inclusion and restorative justice in our own lives and leadership. Get started with: https://www.advancingjustice-aajc.org/sites/default/files/2021-03/John%20C.%20Yang%20Testimony%20to%20House%20Judiciary%20Committee%20%28March%2018%202021%29.pdf
o Leverage disaggregated data from UO’s Office of Institutional Research as a first step to understand how faculty, staff as well as students of Asian descent are succeeding and, also, where they are encountering barriers. For example, where are colleagues of Asian descent represented in UO decision-making and recognition processes? How, indeed, are people of Asian descent represented in UO’s curriculum? How are Asian and Asian American voices informing our efforts to redress inequities through equity-based policies, processes, systems and norms. https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.axios.com/poll-1-in-4-asian-americans-experience-hate-incident-bdabac42-bc34-428d-95a7-8a6043732733.html?utm_campaign=organic&utm_medium=socialshare&utm_source=email__;!!C5qS4YX3!X7CAvtMOQ4w8lVza1dTDg4YM01Pxs5NMXKPN9P2P4ojbImrWb4B5GA7TWFG-NnXb$<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.axios.com/poll-1-in-4-asian-americans-experience-hate-incident-bdabac42-bc34-428d-95a7-8a6043732733.html?utm_campaign=organic&utm_medium=socialshare&utm_source=email__;!!C5qS4YX3!X7CAvtMOQ4w8lVza1dTDg4YM01Pxs5NMXKPN9P2P4ojbImrWb4B5GA7TWFG-NnXb$>
o Elevate as well as reward scholarship, teaching and service of Asian and Asian-American scholars, whose work documents and/or addresses misogyny, racism and discrimination against people of Asian descent. Appropriately incorporate relevant strategies in our own leadership and campus work.
