Research Driving Change

Dear Colleagues,
It is in times like these that I fully appreciate our higher education research mission. Research is thought leading and it prepares us for tomorrow, even an unanticipated tomorrow, like today. To varying extents, our faculty have anticipated the need to resolve the challenges of racism, educational inequities, and school disruption – let alone wildfires, floods, and pandemics - and subjected each to rigorous research.
What differs about today is the urgency to apply this research to resolve long-standing problems, or at least mitigate them until further discoveries are made, and certainly, begin to effect change. This e-communication is being sent to you in the spirit of urgency that I feel to effect change. While I do not want to act in the absence of evidence, in many cases, there is a sufficient corpus of knowledge available to allow us to take action based on promising evidence.
Like other institutions, we rolled out apps, curricula, and remote-instruction guidance to teachers and caregivers based on their possessing at least promising evidence of efficacy. However, I am feeling the need to do more to help children, their teachers, their parents and other caregivers, by disseminating research findings and promising practices sooner, and to a broader audience. That is the spirit of this communication.
I am forwarding you a brief article about the work of Joanna Goode, Sommerville Knight Professor of Education. Joanna and colleagues around the country are leading efforts to ensure equitable access to coding instruction. Serendipitously, their work on promising practices for online teacher professional development has prepared many teachers for the remote instruction required of many teachers today. I hope that you find Joanna’s work informative.
Please reach out to me if you wish more information about Joanna’s work, or other research that we are using today to drive much-needed change. My email address is educationdean at uoregon.edu<mailto:educationdean at uoregon.edu>.
Wishing you safety, health, and success,
Randy

Goode and Team Fighting for Equitable Education
Historically, computer science hasn’t been accessible to students
marginalized by race, gender, poverty, or their local school districts’ lack of resources. Joanna Goode<https://education.uoregon.edu/people/faculty/goodej>, PhD, is using a multiyear grant from the National Science Foundation to change that fact, working with teachers nationwide to develop coursework that is culturally relevant and inclusive.
The grant-funded project focuses on Goode’s course “Exploring Computer Science,” providing teachers with tools to implement equity-based computer science instruction in their classrooms.

Leslie Leve- Improving Children's Lives
With a grant from the National Institutes of Health, Leslie Leve<https://education.uoregon.edu/people/faculty/leve>, PhD, is leading the way in studying obesity in children. Comparing information from siblings who were either adopted at birth or were raised by their birth families, Leve is working to identify factors that impact child health and well-being, such as social relationships, biological factors, and chemical exposures.

Lillian Duran- Inclusive Language Assessments
Lillian Durán<https://education.uoregon.edu/people/faculty/lduran>, PhD, is using a grant from the US Department of Education to develop Spanish language tools that assess children ages 3-5 years old, when early intervention is most crucial.
Employing cutting-edge measurement methods
(Rasch Modeling), Durán is applying a strengths-based approach that honors the children’s home language and culture.
