This issue is devoted to our faculty research, teaching, and outreach with Latinx communities. Dr. Umansky’s work to improve bilingual education is remarkable for both its scope and impact – helping improve the educational experience for more than a million English Language Learners in California each year. Dr. Leve’s new NIH grant will allow our university to better serve the public health needs of our local Latinx community. Further community outreach will be achieved by Dr. Heather McClure’s new grant which will instantiate the Latinx Education After Public School (LEAPS) program in local schools as means of improving the availability of information about potential career paths to Latinx students in middle school. On the instructional side, Dr. Audrey Lucero is directing the campus-wide Latinx minor for the College of Arts and Sciences. The remainder of this issues provides a profile of Felicia Gutierrez, honors our international students, and announces a new faculty collaborative focused on educational equity.

Ilana Umansky, PhD
Ilana Umansky, PhD, has recently been selected as a 2020 National Academy of Education (NAEd)/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellow. She was selected from a pool of 221 applicants of prestigious scholars of education. She will follow in the footsteps of over 800 of the strongest education researchers that are in the field today.
Ilana's project is titled "A Statewide Examination of English Learner’s Access to English Language Arts: Effects of, and Solutions to, Conscribed Access" and will examine barriers to multilingual English learner (EL) students’ access to college-preparatory classes in Oregon high schools. She will look closely at students' access to English language arts classes, the impact of limited access on students’ academic achievement and graduation, as well as how specific policies and practices in schools can increase ELs’ access to core content. The project will ultimately work towards developing solutions to address access barriers and expand EL-classified students' learning opportunities. Ilana will build on existing partnerships with agencies eager to establish beneficial policies for EL-classified students.
