Dear Faculty and Staff,

This is not the time of year to provide notices of upcoming activities. Rather, it’s time to begin resting, purposefully. However, I do hope that you will take a few moments to join me in celebrating the newest accomplishments of our community. This final recitation of achievements provides a needed reminder that through it all, our community endures and thrives.

By the way, The Weekly will be on hiatus during the break and returning the week of January 11.

Take care,

Randy

Accolades:

  * Commendations are in order for Leslie Leve and Dave DeGarmo. Both were featured in the latest edition of Inside Oregon, a magazine for the UO donor community. These scholars, along with Bill Cresko of Biology, led the effort to obtain a $4.9 million award from the NIH to expand COVID-19 testing to serve Latinx communities in Oregon. Their leadership of pandemic health care equity serves as a premier example of the values of our college.

  * Congratulations to Michelle Jacob and Leilani Sabzalian for securing an Oregon Educator Advancement Council Grow Your Own (GYO) educator preparation partnership grant. This grant will bring need resources to AIAN youth and families, and strengthen our long-term recruitment efforts for our Indigenous teacher preparation program.

  * The American Psychological Association (APA) recently announced that Professor Emerita Linda Forrest was selected as the 2020 recipient of the APA Raymond D. Fowler Award, an award that recognizes an APA member who has had a significant and enduring impact on APA as an organization. Dr. Forrest has demonstrated a clear dedication to advancing APA's mission, outstanding service to the association throughout her distinguished career, and consensus-building among constituent groups within the organization. Dr. Forrest was presented the Fowler Award on December 17, 2020 via zoom at the 2020 APA Awards Ceremony. https://www.apa.org/about/awards/fowler-cont

  * And, congratulations to Associate Professor Cengiz Zopluoglu who has been selected as a recipient of a Duolingo Competitive Research Grant for his study, “Rediscovering the Continuous Response Model: An Alternative Modeling Approach for Scoring Items in the Duolingo English Test.” Cengiz received the full funding requested in his proposal and will begin his project after the new year. https://englishtest.duolingo.com/grants
