Dear Faculty and Staff,

I hope that you found some time today to read the latest messages from President Schill and Provost Phillips about our university plans for the fall quarter. I wish to add some details about how this information may affect our COE plans. In sum, our instructional plans will change very little, and only around the margins. I’ll try to explain.

Our college is offering nearly 300 courses this fall. Of these, fewer than 25 are currently planned for face-to-face instruction. And, these courses are being offered by a total of about 13 instructors, including a mixture of GEs, career track instructional faculty, pro-tems, and tenure-related faculty. In other words, our current instructional plans are already well-aligned with the goal of offering primarily remote instruction. Department heads will contact these instructors of record in the coming week to ensure that their courses align fully with the newly announced university instructional plans, and adjustments made. I will not burden all of you with the particulars of these potential adjustments today, because there will be so little impact on our currently planned instruction. For now, we need to remain focused on offering world-class remote instruction.

Second, undergraduate and graduate “clinical” experiences (practica, internship, field experiences, etc.) will continue as scheduled. We are assured that school-based experiences may proceed as planned because schools are required to meet Oregon public health official’s requirements for safe opening and operation. Hospitals and many other institutional clinical training sites are also compliant with public health guidelines. We will, however, be putting a procedure in place for ensuring that all clinical training/experience sites meet these same requirements. Again, we will have to work through some nuances with individual sites, but for now, we will proceed with these course offerings as planned and adapt only as necessary to protect our student’s health and safety at sites where compliance is in question.

I will close by conveying a simple message. Our plans for remote courses, clinical experiences, building reopening, resumption of operations, faculty and staff remote and on-campus work, and other good planning conducted over the past many months remain intact. Please also know that we are already working on any adjustments and adaptations as required by these latest announcements.

I am grateful to all of you for maintaining the forward momentum expected of one of the best COEs in the country.

Be safe,

Randy
