Dear Students, Staff, and Faculty,
I am pleased to announce Dr. Lucero’s new position as leader of this important curriculum opportunity for our students. Dr. Lucero’s appointment also creates new potential for Latinx studies collaborations between COE faculty and those in the College of Arts and Sciences, where the new minor is housed.
A story about the June, 2020, approval of the new minor can be found in the Daily Emerald at https://www.dailyemerald.com/news/latinx-studies-minor-approved-for-next-fall-at-uo/article_10aae30a-b501-11ea-8514-3bc8df85a4dc.html. The UO Latinx Studies minor is embedded in the interdisciplinary study of race and ethnicity in the United States and the Americas, providing students with a broad understanding of the history, complexity, and diversity of Latinx peoples in relation to the humanities, social sciences, and the professions. Drawing on the research and teaching of 32 faculty members in 14 departments and schools, this minor offers students a unique opportunity to explore these issues in ways they can apply to a wide variety of careers in K-12 education, media, law, social services, health care, public policy, and higher education. Information about the Latinx Studies Minor will be available soon at https://ethnicstudies.uoregon.edu/latinx-studies-minor-0.
For those you who do not know Audrey, Dr. Lucero is Associate Professor of Language and Literacy in the Department of Education Studies in the COE. Her research focuses on bilingual language acquisition among Latinx children and the experiences of transnational and immigrant students in K-12 schools. She also serves as Director of the Critical & Sociocultural Studies in Education Ph.D. program, as a faculty advisor for the Latinx Academic Residential Community, and is a member of the Dreamers Working Group steering committee.
Wishing Dr. Lucero and her colleagues all success!
Randy
