Welcome back or to the University of Oregon! Our teams are working hard to prepare our buildings for the beginning of Fall term and below are some answers frequently asked questions about working on campus and the COE Complex:
1. Office furniture/ergonomics:
We have some furniture items in our surplus that may make your space more comfortable, just ask. If you have a special need or require an ergonomic assessment, please contact https://safety.uoregon.edu/ergonomics .
2. Hanging/displaying items in your office:
We have student workers that are happy to help you decorate your office. Send me an email eowens at uoregon.edu<mailto:eowens at uoregon.edu> and we will take care of you. If you choose to put items up on the walls yourself, we ask that you do not use scotch tape. If you have notices or messages that you would like to display, please use the tack board or display rails provided outside your door or in your area.
3. Key and card access:
Email me eowens at uoregon.edu<mailto:eowens at uoregon.edu> for all key and card access requests. When making key and access card requests, please include your 95# number and the small-font numbers that can be found on the top right hand corner of your card. Keys can be picked up at the EMU Key/Card Office https://emu.uoregon.edu/key-and-access-office
4. Building security:
Each individual is responsible for securing their own office. Please do not prop open doors leading into suites "after-hours" as this poses a substantial security risk. Please do not leave any windows open or unlocked in either offices or classrooms overnight.
5. Can I open my window in my office?
Yes, but keep in mind that during the spring, open windows can be challenging to some folks that suffer from allergies. The Willamette Valley is world famous for high pollen counts during the spring months so please be respectful of your neighbors and workmates. Open windows can also adversely affect the ability of the HVAC system to run properly and efficiently, particularly if you have a thermostat in your office.
6. How are our buildings heated/cooled?
Please contact me if your space is too warm/cold. We make every effort to keep our buildings between 68-75 degrees during occupied hours (8a-9pm M-F). When our spaces are unoccupied, the heating set point is automatically lowered to 60 degrees and the cooling set point is raised to 80 degrees. Our building is equipped with occupancy sensors that indicate if a space is occupied during "off" hours and will engage the HVAC system to cool/heat the space to 68-75 which can take up to 20 minutes during unseasonably warm or cool months. Keep this in mind when opening windows to control internal temperatures as the temperature of external air can confuse the HVAC sensors and lead to inefficient cooling/heating.
7. Classroom and Conference room furniture configuration:
The furniture in our buildings allow for a tremendous amount of flexibility in the way we orient furniture or utilize rooms. We encourage faculty and students to use rooms to their fullest ability. If you make changes to the configuration of the furniture in a given space, please return it to the default configuration posted in the room.
8. Is it OK to bring pets into University buildings?
While many of us are pet lovers in the COE, only service animals are permitted into University buildings. Owners of service animals are strongly encouraged to register them with the appropriate offices on campus. For more information on the restrictions around animals on campus, please see https://policies.uoregon.edu/vol-4-finance-administration-infrastructure/ch-5-public-safety-risk-services/animal-control
9. Can we bring bicycles into the buildings?
We do not allow bicycles in our building sas there is ample bicycle parking around the complex. The bicycle cage on the north side of HEDCO and lockers to the north of Lokey may offer additional bicycle security for those interested in that level of assurance. For more information https://transportation.uoregon.edu/bike.
If you have other specific questions about COE or University buildings, please contact me at eowens at uoregon.edu<mailto:eowens at uoregon.edu> or 6-1474. Have a great Fall term and Go Ducks!
