Dear Faculty and Staff,

We are taking actions this summer toward improving the student experience in our college. In that regard, I am pleased to announce several moves - both physical and operational - that will be implemented in the short and long term with the intent of better serving our students. Several faculty and staff have contributed to the pending improvements over the last year including, staff undergraduate advisors and faculty academic program coordinators. In addition, our undergraduate and graduate students, through their participation in Dean's Student Advisory Board (DSAB) meetings, offered numerous ideas for improvements.

In brief, at the beginning of the Fall quarter our student services office in HEDCO Suite 130, where my current office is located, will be populated by staff members with more student-facing roles and expertise. They will provide a full range of technical and advising support directly to current and prospective students. In order to accommodate more student services, my current office will be subdivided to create two new offices. The staff expertise to be located in Suite 130 will now include: TK20 support and assistance (Rachel Latimer), CoE scholarships (Andrea Olson), academic advising (a rotating undergraduate advisor of the week in collaboration with academic program coordinators), general reception, information, and directions for walk-ins, including the dispensing of candy (a student receptionist at the front desk), CoE events (Lisa Fortin) and college orientation and building tours (students and staff), among other services. I am beyond pleased at the prospect of creating a one-stop-shop for students that is conveniently located near the main entrance to HEDCO.

We will achieve these improvements by moving people. I will be moving upstairs to HEDCO Suite 230. By Fall, all deans and associated staff will be relocated to Suite 230. Finance and Operations staff, including Human Resources, will remain in place in Suite 230, thus allowing us to have a full functioning faculty and staff services unit in one location. Effectively, we are creating an analogous one-stop-shop for faculty and staff services in HEDCO 230.

Of course, there is never enough space. In the interim, we will place our development staff in Suite 130 and communications staff on the third floor of HEDCO. Nancy Golden has already moved to Lokey to begin forming a dedicated ORSN office in collaboration with Sol Joye.

Timing? I will be moving next week in order for construction to begin to divide my current office. Other staff and deans will follow until we are ready to greet students in the Fall. I will continue to be available by email and for scheduled meetings throughout the move even as our location shifts over the coming weeks.

I will keep informed of our progress. This alignment of our mission with our services and space utilization is timely, especially as we prepare to celebrate the first decade of the highly successful HEDCO building.

Regards,

Randy
