Greetings!

Interested in education policy and practice? Eager to hear about some of the latest research and contributions to this field by UO faculty and graduate students?

This is a reminder to check out the seminar series in the department of Educational Methodology, Policy, and Leadership this February through June! With one to two seminars scheduled each month, there are sure to be a few topics to pique your interest. See the attached flyer for details. Some light refreshments will be offered to those who attend, but Zoom connection will be available for off-campus attendees as well.

The second session of the EMPL Seminar Series will be Monday, March 4. Below is an abstract of what will be discussed by Assistant Professor Ilana Umansky:
This study, co-authored with Jennifer Lee and Rebecca Callahan, explores the existence and contours of a reclassification gap between Chinese and Latinx English learner students in one large school district, along with possible mechanisms that drive that gap. Using mixed methods including discrete-time hazard modeling of administrative data (2003/4-2016/17) and in-depth interviews with 21 veteran educators and administrators, we find a large and persistent reclassification gap, reaching, at its widest, over 35 percentage points. Drawing on grounded theory and applying prior research on the racial achievement gap and educational outcomes of immigrant students, we find evidence for the role of four categories of mechanisms. These include (1) individual and family characteristics, (2) school and instructional context, (3) social capital and co-ethnic community, and (4) stereotypes and discrimination.
