Dear Colleagues,
I regret to inform you of the passing of Siegfried "Zig" Engelmann on February 15th. Professor Engelmann's work elevated the College to new levels of prominence in the 1970s with the introduction of Project Follow-Through, one of the largest educational experiments in U.S. History. His substantial and nationally recognized body of work set the stage for many of our College's accomplishments today. This work, for example, was centered around one basic tenet that would eventually become one of our College's touchstones: All children can learn.
We will move forward with plans (that were already underway before Professor Engelmann's passing last week) to host an event this Fall marking the 50th anniversary of Project Follow-Through, which will honor the intellectual foundations of much of our College's current work - particularly our continuing legacy of high profile contributions in special education.
I understand that Dr. Engelmann's family is planning a celebration of life that will be open to the public. I will inform you of those plans as details become available.
I offer my condolences to his family and many close colleagues, especially our own Dianna Carrizales-Engelmann.
With sympathy,
Randy
