coe-staff: Upcoming faculty and staff meetings

Dear Faculty,

I am grateful for the considerable time you have afforded me in your recent departmental meetings to share your thoughts and concerns about issues of the day.  As promised, I am now providing you with some details about engaging all faculty and staff in the process of re-envisioning our college's structure.  There is new urgency that informs this work.  As I have shared in our face to face meetings, our student applications are flagging, our enrollments have been steady state for a decade, and our students are requesting deeper collaboration among our faculty, programs, and departments because they are convinced that it will enrich their academic experience.  Originally, this work was undertaken due to our fiscal challenge.  Now, I am convinced that our primary goal should be the formation of an academic structure that better encourages equity, inclusion, and student access and success.

In the interest of moving this work forward with care, please note that there will be two All Faculty and Staff meetings held this quarter (Friday February 2nd 1 - 3, and Friday March 16th 1 - 3) in order for us to start having discussions about reorganizing our academic departments in the interest of improving collaboration, coordination, and ultimately, our successful pursuit of our five priorities. In addition, there is a "Dialogue with the Dean" open meeting scheduled for Friday February 16th, 1-3,  to ensure a forum for any discussion that comes up independent of the two larger sessions. Further, I will schedule individual department and cross-departmental discussion groups to gather input and understand any open questions.

My plan is to handle this process as we would any major college decision. To this end, the decision, or set of actions, will be made after we have exercised a full exploration of our academic structure including several rounds of faculty discussion and consultation and culminating in a faculty vote based on our COE Internal Governance guidelines.

I will share an initial proposal with you this week that is designed to kick-start the conversation that will engage us for the remainder of this academic year and be completed by graduation.
