Dear Instructors:
As you create your fall-term syllabi, please find below additional resources (e.g., class videos, Thi’s original art) and events that are associated with the Common Read, The Best We Could Do, by Thi Bui.
Below are some ways that student engagement with the book can occur at the beginning of the term:
a) sharing videos from the CR website: https://commonreading.uoregon.edu/. The first video they would have seen at IntroDUCKtion. The second video, a welcome/intro directly from author Thi Bui, will be new. Both videos can lead to discussion questions or responses from your group.
I want to especially note that 9 faculty from across campus have put together a Teaching Guide for your reference and use. The UO Libraries has also developed a Common Reading Research Guide. These and other resources for you as a faculty member are available at https://commonreading.uoregon.edu/resources-for-the-best-we-could-do-2/
b) The morning of Convocation (this Friday, Sept. 21) will feature a section of College Block that will highlight the Common Reading in different ways (info table, an open art wall for visual responses, Thi's video will be played, etc.). Please encourage your students to contribute to the art wall, drop by the information table, and generally look for fun and engaging signs and opportunities throughout the morning. Most especially I would encourage you to take your group to a room TBA on the 4th floor of the Ford Alumni Center that will be designated for introductory discussion and engagement re: themes and content of the book. This would be approximately 20-30 minutes to drop-in with other students and faculty who are using the book. This is a fun way to connect with other groups while beginning to make connections with themes and content from the book. Learn more: https://convocation.uoregon.edu/content/uo-convocation
c) Additional events and opportunities associated with this year's Common Reading are posted here: https://commonreading.uoregon.edu/events/. I would particularly call out two opportunities:
the JSMA Common Seeing exhibition that opens Sept. 21: https://jsma.uoregon.edu/exhibitions/reframing-fragments-best-we-could-do. Cheryl Hartup would welcome planning a tour/related activities associated with the exhibition with you. Some of Thi Bui's original artwork for the book will be featured. Thi will be joining our campus in late January for a public talk, artist's reception, and both student and faculty facing workshops. Stay tuned for more!
the SOJC students exhibition 63 years later<http://63yearslater.com/> of their recent journey & related learning in Vietnam. Currently on showcase of the 2nd floor of Allen Hall. FYI, their online exhibition will also be featured at College Block.
