Dear Faculty and Staff,

I write to you today with great humility and gratitude. I am humbled by the opportunity to watch you work with great efficacy and often under challenging circumstances. I am grateful for your many extraordinary efforts to teach our students, conduct ground breaking research and scholarship, serve our academic disciplines and our public, and make wise use of our financial resources.

Today, our latest budgetary projections show us ending the current 2019 fiscal year at nearly break even. How did we do this? We received a generous one-time gift from one of our donors and one-time funds from our university administration, we increased masters student tuition revenue two years in a row, we eliminated some pro-tem faculty expenses, we eliminated some faculty and staff positions and left even more vacant positions unfilled, and all of this work laid the foundation for good fortune in the form of unanticipated salary savings from open positions.

We will, however, have to continue the good work of curriculum revision to assure our future as the leading college of education in the country. We will have to weigh carefully the numerous requests for additional expenditures that occur with regularity. Today, I roughly estimate that I have a few hundred thousand dollars in requests for new spending before me. If I do fund any new requests, we will have to seek offsetting cost reductions. We have to make these difficult decisions in the near term because we are, metaphorically, a family without any savings to fall back on. I assure you that I will do my best to avoid putting our college in such a precarious financial situation again.

I am now focused on pursuing growth, expansion, and new achievements. We are, in fact, already working with some academic programs that have demonstrable potential for growth. More information will be forthcoming about this work.

Returning to today, please have a wonderful weekend.

Gratefully,

Randy
