HEDCO 230T

Megan Ferriby, a candidate for the CFT Assistant Professor position will be presenting her Colloquium titled "Psychosocial and relational correlates of weight loss and behavior change among bariatric surgery patients" on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at 3:30 pm in HEDCO 230T.

Megan Ferriby Bio

Megan Ferriby is a Ph.D. candidate at the Ohio State University in the Department of Human Sciences, specializing in Couple and Family Therapy and Obesity Science. Her research trajectory focuses on examining the influence of romantic partners and relationships on patient weight loss and behavior change throughout the bariatric surgery process. She has published several articles, including in Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, Obesity Surgery and SOARD, and has presented her work at National and International conferences (American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), Obesity Week, International Society for Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity). Her past work has been awarded the AAMFT Graduate Student Research Award. She is currently funded by a dissertation fellowship for the next year to complete her dissertation entitled: "Preliminary efficacy, feasibility, and acceptability of partner attendance throughout bariatric pre- and post-surgery clinical encounters", a longitudinal and randomized controlled trial to determine the effect of partner attendance on patient outcomes and the romantic relationship. The results of this project will provide the foundation for the development of future couples-based interventions. In addition to her research, she has work with Dr. Keeley Pratt to create a clinical placement with Ohio State's Comprehensive Center for Adult Weight Management and Bariatric Surgery. For the past two years, she has worked primarily with patients who are seeking weight loss through lifestyle modification, medication, and bariatric surgery. She provides both behavioral (cognitive and behavioral, motivational interviewing, etc.) and couple and family therapy to patients who have trouble setting and reaching goals and have challenges with their support systems, respectively. Dr. Pratt and herself developed the behavioral health and family therapy protocol on site and referral pathways off-site, including revamping the behavioral curriculum for an outpatient adult weight management program (the Living Well Program).

Dr. Andy Garbacz will be presenting his Colloquium titled "Enhancing Children's Developmental Ecologies to Promote Mental Health" at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 7th in HEDCO 230T.

Dr. Garbacz's Bio:
Andy Garbacz is Assistant Professor of School Psychology in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research focuses on developing, testing, and disseminating ecological programs to promote children's mental health and reduce the risk of later mental health concerns. Andy's work emphasizes aligning and integrating family-school-community engagement in a three-tier prevention framework. His program of research embeds a focus on improving adoption, quality implementation, and sustainability of empirically-validated practices in real world community settings, such as homes and schools. Andy holds a PhD in Psychological Studies in Education (School Psychology) from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is a licensed psychologist and licensed/certified school psychologist. Andy has experience in schools, community mental health clinics, and medical settings.

Colloquium Abstract:
Children's unmet mental health needs persist across contexts. A promising approach to promote children's mental health is to align and integrate mental health systems within and across children's developmental ecologies, such as home, school, and community settings. This presentation will describe a program of research focused on aligning and integrating systems of support for children to enhance their developmental ecologies, promote mental health, and reduce the risk of later mental health concerns. The program of research emphasizes promoting adoption, quality implementation, and sustainability of empirically-validated practices by parents and educators in homes and schools. Results from prior studies and future research directions will be discussed.

Location

HEDCO 230T

Colloquium titled "Immigrant Families in Transition and Change" will be held on Monday, December 10 at 3:30 pm in HEDCO 230T.

Bertranna Muruthi Bio

Dr. Bertranna Muruthi completed her master's degree in Family and Child Studies at Miami University of Ohio and her doctoral degree in Human Development and Family Sciences with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Georgia.

Her research uses culturally responsive community based collaborative methods. This strength-based model is used to look at the family as the unit of analysis within the context of communities and the community based organizations that serve them. As such, family needs, and resilient strategies are understood at a systemic level. She incorporates community culture, knowledge, and practices throughout her research with the aim of producing culturally effective programming that leads to community transformation and social change. There are three main research areas she addresses to develop her program of research: (a) migration, resettlement, and transnationalism of documented and undocumented immigrants; (b) predictors of risk and resilient behavior in immigrant families and; (c) development of intervention and prevention programming for immigrant families.
