coe-staff: Gratitude for our Successful Research and Outreach Showcase

Dear Faculty and Staff,

Yesterday's event was a success by all measures. I heard many positive comments from those in attendance. The room was full, the booths were inviting and the work informative. President Schill offered inspiring opening remarks, offices from throughout campus were represented, and our panel of speakers provoked conversation and debate long into the evening.

Our guests spoke glowingly about the work done here and the hospitality shown them, and they shared their expertise freely and with authority. Erin Chaparro opened the panel with an insightful timeline of the growth and impact of our research and outreach work. Frank Worrell (Cal Berkeley) provided important data about the pressing societal needs for education science and scholarship. Catherine Bradshaw (UVA) provided stimulating ideas about the continuum or research approaches and a brief overview of transdisciplinary methods. Darleen Opfer (RAND) made a compelling argument for including communications and societal impact as centerpieces of our research enterprises. They were fantastic.

I am grateful to all involved in the successful planning of this event including, Emily Tanner-Smith, Dianna Carrizales Engelmann, Lisa Fortin, Maggie Bosworth, our ROC units, and other leaders of the event. Well done!
