coe-staff: Graduate Employee (GE) Committee

Dear Faculty,

I am writing a follow-up message to my email last week describing our current departmental allocations of general fund GEs.  As you know, many of our Ph.D. students are funded on training grants and in offices around campus, and in the community.  I've received inquiries about decisions regarding GE allocations, maximum length of eligibility for GE funding, and COE philosophy regarding the desired combination of duties that maximizes our doctoral student's professional development while here.  Although we have much to do, it's time for us to seriously consider these questions and others.

As such, I have asked the Faculty Advisory Committee (FAC) (Joanna Goode, Karrie Walters, Erin Chaparro, Kathleen Scalise, Leslie Leve and McKay Sohlberg) to begin discussing the various questions around Ph.D. education and GEs, and create a draft of ideas for us to consider.  I will be meeting with the FAC today to obtain their desires as to how to include all faculty in this process between now and graduation.

I am grateful that the FAC is willing to take on this duty as their signature one for the remainder of the year.  Their work will benefit us greatly as we add clarity to all aspects of the GE process and the distinctiveness of Ph.D. education at our COE.
