coe-staff: Update on Activities from the Ad Hoc Committee on College Structure

Dear COE faculty and staff,

I write on behalf of our Ad Hoc Committee on College Structure with five updates on activities. This information will be summarized tomorrow at the COE faculty/staff meeting, but we wanted you to have copies of documents we've been reviewing and discussing (hence the copious number of attachments to this email!).

First, your committee has been meeting weekly over the spring term in order to wrap our arms and head around the Dean's charge (see attachment Ad Hoc Committee), which was to propose an academic structure that:

*        Increases collaboration and innovation at all levels of our organization and in all activities, academic and operational;

*        Expands access to diverse faculty for our students across disciplinary and departmental boundaries;

*        Lessens administrative burdens on our faculty by critically examining the structures, such as our bylaws, that drive a high level of service;

*        Creates shared services to allow us to make best and most responsible use of our constrained resources, and

*        Increases enrollment, particularly at the masters level.

Second, the committee met with several members of the Office of the Provost to discuss their goals and provide additional transparency regarding the financial situation in the COE and the new budget allocation model (see attachments provided by the OtP - COE Questions, Operational Metrics COE, and Operational Metrics UO).

Third, we organized into work groups that focused on curriculum, research center integration, and administrative structure for a deeper dive discussion on these issues.

Fourth, we came back together as a group and discussed several different models of College of Education structure that may help us obtain our goals (see attachment Restructuring plan models)

The Dean has asked the Ad Hoc Committee to put together a written document with our recommendations by December 1, 2018.

Fifth and finally, in an effort to get college-wide input and engagement on the topic, we are planning several activities:

*        We are sharing a *draft* document that outlines several models of potential COE restructuring (see attached Restructuring Models). We ask that you review the models, discuss these models with colleagues, and come back in the Fall ready to discuss and engage further on the topic.

*        In the Fall we will send out these attachments again and also provide a Qualtrics survey for faculty and staff to provide feedback on the different College Structure Models we have drafted.

*        We will hold a Town Hall Meeting with the COE Ad Hoc Committee on College Structure during Week 1 of Fall term.

*        We will consider and incorporate feedback from COE stakeholders into our report to the dean.

I will summarize this info tomorrow at the COE faculty/staff meeting.
