coe-staff: IES releases "Condition of Education 2018"

Dear Faculty and Staff,

The latest edition is full of predictable, unanticipated, and unsettling findings.  It's a dense read, so I began with the special report on alternative educator prep pathways, which are typically some combination of off-campus, night, weekend, and on-line programs for career changers with bachelors degrees in fields other than education.  The demographic differences between full-time daytime programs and alternative prep programs were larger than I anticipated.  In the words of the authors,

Approximately 18 percent of public school teachers in 2015-16 had entered teaching through an alternative route to certification program. Compared to those who entered through a traditional route, a higher percentage of alternative route teachers were Black (13 vs. 5 percent), Hispanic (15 vs. 8 percent), of Two or more races (2 vs. 1 percent), and male (32 vs. 22 percent). https://nces.ed.gov/programs/coe/indicator_tlc.asp
