Dear College Staff:
The first University effort to support our use of the common read is June 8. Our own Dr. Shoshana Kerewsky will present along with others. RSVP link below.
We also will have College faculty from each Department present briefly at our end-of-year College staff meeting on the use of this graphic memoir in our classrooms.
Thank you,
Krista

“How much of me is my own, and how much is stamped into my blood and bone, predestined?” ― Thi Bui
“A book to break your heart and heal it.” — Viet Thanh Nguyen, Pulitzer Prize winning novelist on The Best We Could Do
Join UO faculty experts as our campus community prepares for the 2018-2019 UO Common Reading: Thi Bui’s The Best We Could Do. A national bestseller, The Best We Could Do was also recently selected by UCLA for its 2018 common book program.
[The Best We Could Do graphic novel cover]
This visually and narratively rich graphic novel offers an evocative memoir about the search for a better future in seeking to understand the past. The Best We Could Doinvites campus conversations about immigration, war, imperialism and refugee status as well as parenthood, pursuit of self-identity in a continually changing sociocultural structure, and the insights of honest personal struggle.
A panel of UO faculty – Lynn Fujiwara (Ethnic Studies), Tara Fickle (English), Charlene Liu b(Art+Design), Shoshana Kerewsky (Education), and Tuong Vu (Political Science) will share contexts for reading, teaching, and thinking about Bui’s work and the issues it raises.
Whether you are considering possibilities for using the book or have already adopted the text, please join us for this collegial conversation about how you might teach and read this book.
This event is sponsored by the Common Reading Program in the Division of Undergraduate Studies and the Teaching Engagement Program.
