coe-staff: Faculty and Staff Meeting budget discussion slides

Dear Faculty and Staff,

Thank you for attending our faculty/staff meeting in such large numbers this past Friday. The full room served as yet another reminder of your extraordinary commitment to your work with our students, your colleagues, and this institution.

And, thanks for allowing me some time to provide at least a brief overview of our current fiscal status and prospects for the upcoming year - FY 20. I am attaching the four slides that I referenced with my remarks, and I'll add a few clarifying notes in this email.

The first two slides show how carefully we have managed our staff and faculty FTE in order to reach a balanced budget this year - FY19. We do, however, have a thin margin for decision-making in the near term. We essentially have no discretionary-spending flexibility other than the $272,292 available for "Additional Staff" in line four of slide one. I failed to mention at the meeting that a portion of these funds are already allocated for the hire of a website editor. With any luck, we will have a fully dedicated website editor in place by the time of the launch of the new site.

All research on student recruitment yields the same finding, that our website is our primary student recruitment tool. As our new website begins to launch in February, it would be a great disservice to our recruitment efforts to see it fall into immediate and chronic decline, as our current one has. This new position will assure that our web site is "of the moment" for every student who visits. We will also apply many of the principles of student recruitment delineated in slide four such as, "pay-per-click" advertising. I'll let Jessica Roberts introduce these new strategies to you in future correspondence.

Please be assured that we are working with many of you already to continue to control our costs, improve our services to students, and grow enrollments and tuition revenue. We will accrue more discretionary funds as the results of these efforts take hold.
