Dear Colleagues,

It has been a newsworthy week for our faculty. Their work was mentioned in publications ranging from The Economist to a U.S. Department of Education blog.

For example, Wendy Machalicek and Kent McIntosh's "Project HEART: Heightened Excellence in Autism Research and Training," doctoral student training grant was written up on an ed.gov blog. ?

Laura Lee McIntyre and Fred Sabb's new grant utilizing functional magnetic resonance imaging to understand how to improve children's communication and social skills, and behavior and emotions, was described in Around the O.

Sarah Stapleton's expertise related to meals at school was also featured in a story in Around the O.

In the April 14 issue of The Economist, the work of our Educational and Community Supports (ECS) research unit was mentioned in an article entitled, Tough Love Falls Out of Fashion in America's Schools. The article citation reads, "Yet many schools are already turning to less punitive schemes. One programme, called Positive Behavioural Interventions and Support (PBIS), tries to improve schools by explicitly teaching good conduct as though it were any other subject."

I apologize for any media mentions that I did not read this week.

I am confident that our many stakeholders attribute great value to the efforts of our faculty and media outlets to better educate us, and to change our institutions.

Randy
