Hello,
Here is a calendar update through the remainder of the Spring term. A couple of events you may want to note:
Tomorrow is Doughnuts for Ducks in the HEDCO Lobby from 9:30 am - 10:30 am. Please join us for coffee, fruit and, of course, Voodoo Doughnuts!
A new event for us this year will take place on Friday, June 8 from 4 pm - 7 pm. The Faculty and Staff Appreciation Picnic will feature food, games and great people. We'll hang out in the HEDCO courtyard, play lawn games, eat great food, and partake of some summer beverages. The menu includes sliders (including veggie sliders), potatoes, cole slaw, fruit, cookies, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages. We'll also celebrate excellence within the COE as Randy will hand out our Faculty Staff Awards at 5:30 pm. An RSVP link and more information will be out mid-May. Family members are invited to attend as well.

If there are events you would like to add to this calendar, all you need to do is set up the event as a meeting on your own outlook calendar and invite coeevents at uoregon.edu<mailto:coeevents at uoregon.edu> to the event. You will receive a confirmation that the event has been added.
Please use the Religious Observances Calendar provided by the Office of the Registrar to identify events, classes, exams or UO activities which may intersect with religious observances: https://registrar.uoregon.edu/calendars/religious-observances
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Lisa

Suicide Prevention Research: From Mechanisms to Implementation

A Colloquium Presentation by Bryann B. DeBeer, Ph.D.
Candidate for the HEDCO Clinic and Research Director TTF Position
Thursday, April 26, 2:00PM-3:30PM with Q & A, room 230T HEDCO

Death by suicide in veterans is a significant public health crisis. A sizable minority of veterans experience mental health issues, particularly posttraumatic stress disorder and related sequelae, which further exacerbate suicide risk. A multipronged research strategy targeted at multiple levels of intervention is needed to stem this crisis. First, investigating the role of novel, modifiable risk factors is key to reducing the high suicide rate. Next, it is paramount to capitalize on this research through translating these findings into actionable suicide prevention efforts. Further, leveraging the nascent field of implementation science is essential to disseminate research products and ensure the rapid uptake of these interventions. Finally, training the next generation of scientist-practitioners in suicide prevention research and clinical practice is critical for sustained, long-term progress in the field.

Bryann DeBeer, Ph.D. is a Principal Investigator at the Veterans Affairs Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 17 Center of Excellence for Research on Returning War Veterans, and an Assistant Professor at Texas A&M College of Medicine. Dr. DeBeer received her B.A. in psychology and fine arts from New York University and her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park. Dr. DeBeer's research and scholarly work focuses on 1) elucidating the underlying mechanisms of suicide risk, particularly in trauma-exposed veteran populations, and 2) translating these findings into novel suicide prevention efforts. In the fall, Dr. DeBeer will become the Director of the Veterans Affairs Patient Safety Center of Inquiry for Suicide Prevention, which draws upon implementation science to create community-based suicide prevention tools targeted towards veterans. She has also received funding from the American Psychological Association to develop trauma assessment training materials that are targeted to psychology students and focus on diverse populations. Dr. DeBeer's research is funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, and the American Psychological Association.

Raising Student Voice: Freedom of Expression Symposium

Location

EMU, Redwood Room

This event is dedicated to exploring the numerous challenges and questions that high school and college educators, policymakers, administrators, and students face when enacting policies and practices intended to strengthen supports for freedom of expression on their respective campuses.

We also hope to identify ways to ensure that students who are entering higher education can be prepared for an environment in which ideas may be more challenging, and more frequently challenged, than in their previous educational settings. We believe that open and honest discourse is a good first step towards fostering a better understanding of the different points of view and considerations that will ultimately help us as we craft best-practice solutions for future educational stakeholders.
