Lisa Fortin lfortin at uoregon.edu
Wed Nov 1 15:05:33 PDT 2017

Hello,
Here is a calendar update for the remainder of the upcoming term. If there are events you would like to add to this calendar, all you need to do is set up the event as a meeting on your own outlook calendar and invite coeevents at uoregon.edu<mailto:coeevents at uoregon.edu> to the event. You will receive a confirmation that the event has been added.
Please use the Religious Observances Calendar provided by the Office of the Registrar to identify events, classes, exams or UO activities which may intersect with religious observances: https://registrar.uoregon.edu/calendars/religious-observances
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Lisa

Attached you will find details regarding the 2017 Leona Tyler Lecture, Research-informed school-based bullying prevention approaches: Narrowing the research-practice gap.

Our speaker this year is Dorothy Espelage, PhD, Professor of Psychology at the University of Florida. Professor Espelage will review two decades of research on school bullying, sexual violence, teen dating violence, and gender-based harassment. Definitions, prevalence rates, and outcomes will be discussed with a particular focus on translating these research findings into prevention and intervention efforts in schools and communities. Evidence-based prevention programs will be highlighted, and implementation and sustainability issues of school-based programs will also be discussed.

The lecture will occur on Friday, November 10th, at 2:30pm in the Ford Lecture Hall at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. Reception to follow. We hope to see you there!

ESPIRIT Scholarship Signing Ceremony

Location

B042, Price Science Commons

Due to the receipt of a new grant from the National Science Foundation, ESPRIT Noyce Program is awarding its first two senior year scholarships on November 13.

Date: Monday, November 13
Time: 4 pm (15 minutes)
Location: Room B042, Price Science Commons and Library (aka the Science Library). Room B042 is on the lower level.

**** ESPRIT Background ****
Last May we were pleased to be awarded a $1.2M, 5-year NSF grant- Noyce: Experiencing Science Practices through Research to Inspire Teaching (aka 'ESPRIT')- that seeks to improve the numbers of and quality of Oregon secondary science teachers. We started this program immediately, and our first cohort of ESPRIT researchers- 6 students from across the sciences**- began summer work in different UO research labs.
The program has key elements:
1) Monthly academic year 'Noyce seminars,' open to all science majors at any undergraduate level, that will bring in master teachers and more senior Noyce scholars as speakers, but will focus on hands-on activities around teaching and research.
2) ESPRIT-sponsored summer research experiences for science major undergraduates with an interest in teaching. These are available to rising sophomores or above, and are a pre-requisite to receiving:
3) Senior (final major) year ESPRIT scholarships*, up to $10K, to finance students moving into the UOTeach Masters-level teacher licensure program, who will then become eligible for a:
4) UOTeach ESPRIT scholarship* of up to $22,000, to complete their teacher licensure.
* those receiving scholarships will have up to 7 years after receiving licensure to teach 4 years (2 years per level scholarship) at a high need school in Oregon, or the scholarship turns into a loan. This is a feature of the NSF Noyce program.
ESPRIT participants will take Education Studies (EDST 420 and others) courses while undergraduates that focus on teaching to improve equity and inclusion in science classrooms. These courses will count towards the UOTeach requirements when they enter that program.

Oregon Students of Color Conference

The Oregon Students of Color Conference provides a safe, inclusive, welcoming space for students of color, which includes queer and trans students of color and allies to express their voices and experiences. We are focused on education around social and political inequalities for students of color that includes a queer justice lens to help establish ways to continue advocacy and progress. Students will interact with community organizations and hear from keynote speakers who have created real change in society. The conference will provide great networking opportunities with hundreds of students of color, queer and trans students of color, and allies from the Pacific Northwest!

The Oregon Students of Color Conference will be November 17-19th @ University of Oregon. For more information, visit: http://www.orstudents.org/osccon/
