Working Together, Achieving More

Dear Colleagues,
As we all work with ever more limited resources, I become increasingly convinced of the wisdom expressed long ago by Herman B. Wells, President of Indiana University from 1938 to 1962, and one of the founders of the Committee on Institutional Collaboration of the BIG 10:

Academic isolation has long been impractical; in today’s world, it is impossible. At a time when yesterday’s bright new fact becomes today’s doubt and tomorrow’s myth, no single institution has the resources in faculty or facilities to go it alone. A university must do more than just stand guard over the nation’s heritage, it must illuminate the present and help shape the future. This demands cooperation—not a diversity of weaknesses, but a union of strengths.

I would like to introduce you to the University of Oregon College of Education’s new Creating Change Through Research communication that we will share with you throughout the year. We are sending these in hopes of building a discussion network with you, and your researchers, regarding how our research may overlap, and to further examine how we are all working towards the same desired outcomes and social changes.

The University of Oregon’s College of Education (COE) continues to further the educational research mission with a heavy focus on external-funded research and outreach—this year totaling $43.8 million. We strive to use these dollars in targeted and responsible ways to continue to be a trusted resource for you, your faculty, your students, and for the larger educational community by pushing the dial on evidence-based innovation in education and the human sciences.

Please look for our 2017 annual report to arrive in January, in which we detail all of our funded research projects, and spotlight some of our outstanding faculty, alumni, and students—while providing you with insights into our goals for the future.

Each new issue will focus on a major theme of research underway by our faculty, including:

  *   » Helping teachers learn to teach coding
  *   » Preparing educators from tribal communities
  *   » Helping students manage internalizing disorders
  *   » Developing tablet-based programs for improving mathematics skills
  *   » Identifying new developmental risk factors

We, like our peers, are working hard to continually create the best education and human services professionals and improve the experiences of all students.
