Advances in the Field of Mixed Methods Research

Colloquium and Q&A
 Monday, April 10, 2017 - 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM
HEDCO 230T
Lunch provided

Mixed methods research involves the strategic and intentional integration of quantitative and qualitative methods to gain unique understandings of research problems beyond what could be achieved by using single methods alone. Mixed methods research therefore offers great potential for addressing complex research questions of interest today, but it also involves a wide range of challenges and tensions associated with the combination of diverse research approaches. The field of mixed methods research has emerged and evolved since the 1990s to advance understanding of the methodological considerations required to effectively implement mixed methods approaches. This talk will introduce key facets of mixed methods research and highlight several recent advances in the applications of and strategies for mixing methods in empirical research in education and across the social and health sciences.

Vicki L. Plano Clark, PhD is an associate professor in the Quantitative and Mixed Methods Research Methodologies area of the School of Education at the University of Cincinnati. As a methodologist, her work focuses on how researchers can meaningfully integrate quantitative and qualitative research approaches within rigorous mixed methods designs as well as how the use of mixed methods is adapted within specific disciplinary and personal contexts. She has authored several books on mixed methods research including Mixed Methods Research: A Guide to the Field (2016) with Nataliya Ivankova and Designing and Conducting Mixed Methods Research (2011) with John W. Creswell. She serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Mixed Methods Research and co-editor for Sage Publishing's Mixed Methods Research Series. She also engages in research and evaluation projects on a wide array of topics including the management of cancer pain, graduate student development, and educational reform.
