Featuring María Blanco, Executive Director of the Undocumented Student Legal Services Center, UC Davis
Tuesday, January 31, 9-10:30 AM. Light breakfast served. RSVP needed and information below.
RSVP to Daniel HoSang, dhosang at uoregon.edu <mailto:dhosang at uoregon.edu> Sponsored by the Department of Ethnic Studies.

Erb Memorial Union
Description: The new administration promises dramatic changes to the legal and political status and conditions facing undocumented students. What do faculty, staff and students need to know to navigate this new environment? What steps can campuses take to proactively protect their students? What role might Dreamers play in challenging this new regime?
To help the UO community navigate these questions, this session features, María Blanco, Executive Director of theUndocumented Student Legal Services Center, which operates out of UC Davis School of Law to provide immigration-related legal services for undocumented students at the six University of California campuses without law schools. Launched in November 2014, the Center is a pilot project of the University of California Office of the President and works in collaboration with the UC Davis School of Law Immigration Law Clinic.
A graduate of UC Berkeley, Blanco has more than 20 years' experience as a litigator and advocate for immigrant rights, women's rights, and social justice. She most recently served as Vice President of Civic Engagement at the California Community Foundation and led its immigrant integration initiatives. Blanco has also served as Executive Director of the Chief Justice Earl Warren Institute at UC Berkeley School of Law, as Executive Director of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area, as an Equal Rights Advocates attorney, as associate director and associate professor at Golden Gate University School of Law, and as National Senior Counsel for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

BE Series: Dr. Donna Beegle

BE Hopeful: Dr. Donna Beegle, author of See Poverty/Be the Difference
The BEseries is excited to partner with the College of Education to bring Dr. Donna Beegle to the UO.

Donna M. Beegle, Ed.D. is an authentic voice who speaks, writes and trains across the nation to break the iron cage of poverty. She is the author of "See Poverty... Be The Difference" and also took part in CNN's panel, "The Other America." Dr. Beegle has received national acclaim and standing ovations for her ability to passionately and succinctly address the issue of poverty. Educators need to know about poverty and its impact on students. Dr. Beegle's lived experiences and emphasis on education as the key pathway out of poverty makes this an especially pertinent presentation for all educators and researchers. Dr. Beegle offers us a story of hope during challenging times, please join us for BEHopeful.

This event will be on Tuesday, February 7th, 7:00pm in EMU Redwood Auditorium. We will be giving away four of Dr. Beegle's books and dessert will be provided after the presentation.

Practicing Resistance: Becoming an Ally

PRACTICING RESISTANCE:
BECOMING AN ALLY

By invitation only.
RSVP to csws at uoregon.edu required; first-come, first-served.

Monday, February 13, 2017

9:00 - 11:00 AM: Faculty Training
12:00 - 2:00 PM: Grad Student Training
2:30 - 4:30: Staff/OA Training

Lewis Lounge
Fourth Floor
University of Oregon School of Law
1515 Agate Street

CSWS invites you to join us for a training to learn -- or refresh your knowledge of -- how to be an ally: how to intervene and stand up safely, appropriately, and constructively when you hear or see something racist, sexist, xenophobic, homophobic, transphobic, or otherwise discriminatory on campus or in our community.

These trainings will help each of us examine our own privilege, our implicit biases, and how to develop dialogue and create safe spaces on campus.

We hope everyone in attendance will come away from these trainings feeling more ready and able to take action to disrupt bullying and discriminatory behavior as they see it in the moment - to move from bystander to active ally.

Trainer Janée Woods is a former attorney who now works at a nonprofit organization focused on supporting community engagement, strengthening democracy and fostering racial equity. She has coached communities across the country on how to organize for equitable change around issues like poverty, early childhood education and food security. She also writes about social justice issues. Her writing has appeared on TheRoot, AlterNet, Quartz, Scenarios USA, and Guernica.
