coe-staff: Agenda addition and information items prior to Friday's meeting

Dear Faculty and Staff,

In the interest of saving time on our agenda, I am providing some information items prior to our upcoming faculty and staff meeting.  I have the following items for you.


  1.  We will identify new academic leaders for the positions of Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Department Head for EMPL, and Department Head for CPHS to fill expired terms.  I will be asking for nominations between January and February with the goal of filling all of these positions by March.  I am filling these expired terms earlier this year in order to cut administrative costs.  Last year we provided stipends for six department heads and two associate deans during the summer leadership transition (two incoming department heads, two outgoing, and two incumbents, and two associate deans).  The appointment of new leaders in March will allow for leadership transition during the Spring Quarter.
  2.  Department heads, in collaboration with our faculty, staff, students, and associate and assistant deans, will continue to identify cost efficiencies during the Winter and Spring terms as we pursue our UO goals of excellence, access, and experience.  Our new UO budgeting system is taking shape and should be in place by Spring term.  This information will help guide us as we make strategic decisions about faculty hiring, student admissions, and related matters with fiscal implications.  We will have a better idea of the particulars of our new fiscal scenario when our department heads, deans, and fiscal and operations staff are briefed in the next few weeks by the Office of Budget and Planning.
  3.  We will continue to evolve the COE's research infrastructure and services to maximize research excellence, innovation, and impact, while creating cost-efficiencies so that our research and outreach units are self-sustaining and integrated with our academic mission. Grant management units will be asked to take an inventory of the administrative support services they provide to research and outreach, and the Research and Outreach Council will make recommendations to update our research and outreach guidance documents.

Finally, Kris Winter, our new Associate Vice President and Dean of Students, will introduce us to the expanded array of UO student services (https://dos.uoregon.edu/) and resources available on the new  https://respect.uoregon.edu/ web site.
