Representation Matters
Book Drive

The Special Education and Clinical Sciences (SPECS) Department is sponsoring a college-wide book drive for children's and young adults' books featuring underrepresented themes, characters and authors. The University of Oregon has decided to reaffirm our shared values of respect for diversity, equity and inclusion and to become a sanctuary campus. In light of these decisions following events and instances of discrimination on campus, in our community and across the nation, many of us in the College of Education have expressed a desire to have a way to make a tangible impact in our community.

Did you know?

  * Only approximately 12% of children's literature features characters of color
  * 6.7 million children in public schools have a documented disability yet the percentage of children's books featuring characters is less than 10%
  * 40% of this year's most commonly banned and challenged books featured LGBTQ+ themes

HELP US SHIFT THE BALANCE OF REPRESENTATION IN THE LITERATURE AVAILABLE TO CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS IN OUR COMMUNITY

What: Bring Donations of New and Gently Used Books for Children and Young Adults Featuring Diverse Characters and Themes
Where: Labeled Boxes at entrances of 240 and 340 HEDCO suites; 130 HEDCO Student Academic Services; and EMPL and EDST departments (Look for balloons!)
When: Now through December 10th

Books will be distributed via Little Free Libraries, and donated to public waiting rooms, schools and child care centers

What Should I Donate?

Choose books that feature characters and themes relevant to underrepresented populations. Diversity in regards to race, ethnicity, religion, language, ability, gender identity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, family make-up, citizenship, etc. are all welcome.

Below is a link to a spreadsheet on OneDrive of books that fit the mission of our book drive. You may choose to purchase books from this list or books that represent diverse issues and themes that matter to you personally or professionally.
