She has developed mathematics instructional programs and tested their effectiveness with elementary and middle school students, including those at risk for academic failure. Drawing on work from research projects focused on enhancing students' mathematical problem solving performance, Jitendra developed mathematics program materials that include Solving math word problems: Teaching students with learning disabilities using schema-based instruction and Solving ratio, proportion, and percent problems using schema-based instruction. She served as a member of the panel for the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) practice guide, Improving Mathematical Problem Solving in Grades 4 through 8. Jitendra has managed several federal research grants and is currently the principal investigator on a U.S. Department of Education (IES) project that studies middle school students' learning of ratio and proportion. Jitendra's scholarly contributions include more than 100 peer-reviewed publications in top tiered journals in special education, educational psychology, and school psychology as well as books, book chapters, and other papers.
