An update on the new EMU:

As a valued partner of ours in UO Scheduling and Event Services, we are excited to welcome you back to the new Erb Memorial Union. I think you will find that the two long years we have been under construction has been time well spent. On July 1 we will be opening most of our new meeting rooms, and we are taking reservations for them right now. The only spaces not available this summer are those in the Ballroom area, which is in the middle of its own hectic renovation in order to open before classes start in the fall. Our Scheduling professionals are available to meet with you and show you our spaces in order to help you find the ideal venue for your meetings and events, and you can check the spaces out (at least diagrams of them) at http://scheduling.uoregon.edu/ .

Like any other major project, our opening brings with it changes and new initiatives. As you may know, the significant cost of the EMU project was shouldered almost exclusively by our students directly through their fees. Both the students and the UO leadership are actively seeking ways to keep student fees down. To that end, departments that are not funded by Incidental Fees will see a nominal charge for the use of space in the EMU beginning September 19. For many of you, however, that charge will be balanced out by the fact that our basic, state-of-the-art technology in most of our meeting rooms will now be included at no extra cost. The labor charges that you used to pay for room technology are a thing of the past when your meeting hosts or presenters manage the in-room controls.

We understand that this new initiative will create some concern. However, we do believe that the reasonable rates, the included technology, the brand new spaces in the middle of campus and the exceptional customer service that our Scheduling and Event Services office provides will prove that the EMU continues to be the best place for your meetings and events. Most importantly, we are sending our students a clear signal that their student union is also being supported by UO’s academic and administrative departments, a move supported by both the Provost and the Vice President for Student Life.

Come check us out!

Rick
