https://law.uoregon.edu/explore/out-of-the-shadows

Join us for an Implicit Bias Symposium called "Out of the Shadows: Implicit Bias, Institutional Responses." We are developing a full-day of interesting debates, trainings, and workshops, such as:
• Basic Implicit Bias Training. Professor Erik Girvan will present a basic implicit bias training – intended to teach the audience about the unconscious responses we all have.
• Science of Intervention. Professor Eugene Borgida from the University of Minnesota will co-lead the Advanced Implicit Bias training, and will present the science of intervention. This training will show you what to do once you’ve recognized that you’re having an implicitly biased response.
• Advanced Implicit Bias Breakout Session. Professors Girvan and Borgida will challenge attendees with a series of scenarios meant to engage what they have learned about intervention and implicit bias.
• Institutional Implicit Bias Workshop. This workshop will bring together members of a variety of institutions so we can work together and create plans to dispel implicit bias in our institutions.
• Evening Lecture. Professor Michael Z. Green from Texas A&M will present the evening lecture. Prof. Green’s research focuses on racial bias in workplace disputes – including labor negotiations and employment discrimination cases. Prof. Green also recently authored a chapter about negotiating while black.
• Public Reception. Symposium attendees and members of the community are welcome to join our public reception!

Subject: Toward a Truly Diverse Faculty ft Ernesto Martinez, 4/18, 3:30pm, 117 Education

Toward a Truly Diverse Faculty, April 18 ▪ 3:30–5pm ▪ 117 Education Sponsored by United Academics

Universities today claim to embrace diversity, yet rarely do we see this realized in practice. Indeed, institutional imperatives and policies often seem to work against diversification rather than for it. What are the barriers to creating faculty diversity and how can they be overcome? What role should administrators and faculty play in achieving this goal?

This panel with two leading faculty experts in the field, drawing from insights in the new volume The Truly Diverse Faculty: New Dialogues in American Higher Education(Palgrave, 2015), co-edited by UO Professor Ernesto Martinez.

Nana Osei-Kofi , Director of the Difference, Power, & Discrimination Program and Associate Professor of Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies at Oregon State University.

Ernesto Javier Martinez, Interim Department Head and Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of Oregon

Dr. Osei-Kofi’s scholarship focuses on critical and feminist social theories and pedagogies, the politics of American higher education, and visual cultural studies/arts-based inquiry. She has co-edited the collection Cultivating Social Justice Teachers: How Teacher Educators Have Helped Students Overcome Cognitive Bottlenecks and Learn Critical SocialJustice Concepts (2012). She contributed to the volume The Truly Diverse Faculty: New Dialogues in American Higher Education (2015).

Dr. Martinez’s research focuses on Comparative Ethnic Studies, Queer Studies, US Latina/o Literature and Culture, and Literary Theory. He co-edited The Truly Diverse Faculty: New Dialogues in American Higher Education (2015) and his book On Making Sense: Queer Race Narratives of Intelligibility (2012) was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award in the LGBT Studies category.

Location

Ford Alumni Center Ballroom

Reminder

30 minutes

On Tuesday, April 19th, the College of Arts & Sciences and the Disability Studies Initiative will be bringing guest speaker, Eli Clare to campus from 7pm-9pm in the Ford Alumni Center Ballroom.

His presentation is titled: Notes on Cure, Disability, and Natural Worlds. This event is open to the public and we would like to encourage UO students, faculty and staff to attend. Accommodations available upon request at inclusion at uoregon.edu.

White, disabled, and genderqueer, Eli Clare happily lives in the Green Mountains of Vermont where he writes and proudly claims a penchant for rabble-rousing. He has written a book of essays Exile and Pride: Disability, Queerness, and Liberation and a collection of poetry The Marrow's Telling: Words in Motion and has been published in many periodicals and anthologies. His newest work, Brilliant Imperfection: Grappling with Cure, will be released early next year. Eli speaks, teaches, and facilitates all over the United States and Canada at conferences, community events, and colleges about disability, queer and trans identities, and social justice. Among other pursuits, he has walked across the United States for peace, coordinated a rape prevention program, and helped organize the first ever Queerness and Disability Conference. When he's not writing or on the road, you can find him reading, hiking, camping, riding his recumbent trike, or otherwise having fun adventures. http://www.eliclare.com
