Keeping it Real, Lively and Strong: Engaged Mindfulness Practices for Resilient Learning Communities
with University of San Francisco Professor of Law Rhonda Magee
Thursday, Apr. 7, 3:30-5:00pm
Knight Library Browsing Room
Doors open and refreshments served beginning at 3:00pm

How might we foster classroom-based learning communities with the strength to deal with crises and controversy as they arise? In this lecture and interactive discussion, Professor Magee will explore the imperative of working to create inclusive, identity-safe and resilient learning communities in the 21st century. She'll share some of the research-based contemplative teaching and learning practices that she and others are using to help create resilient spaces for intellectual and inner life development on college campuses.

Rhonda Magee is professor of law at the University of San Francisco. Her scholarly work focuses on race law and policy as well as on humanizing legal education and the practice of law. She is an expert in contemplative and identity-sensitive pedagogy and has served as president of the national board of the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society and co-director of USF's Center for Teaching Excellence.

https://law.uoregon.edu/explore/out-of-the-shadows

Join us for an Implicit Bias Symposium called "Out of the Shadows: Implicit Bias, Institutional Responses." We are developing a full-day of interesting debates, trainings, and workshops, such as:
* Basic Implicit Bias Training. Professor Erik Girvan will present a basic implicit bias training - intended to teach the audience about the unconscious responses we all have.
* Science of Intervention. Professor Eugene Borgida from the University of Minnesota will co-lead the Advanced Implicit Bias training, and will present the science of intervention. This training will show you what to do once you've recognized that you're having an implicitly biased response.
* Advanced Implicit Bias Breakout Session. Professors Girvan and Borgida will challenge attendees with a series of scenarios meant to engage what they have learned about intervention and implicit bias.
* Institutional Implicit Bias Workshop. This workshop will bring together members of a variety of institutions so we can work together and create plans to dispel implicit bias in our institutions.
* Evening Lecture. Professor Michael Z. Green from Texas A&M will present the evening lecture. Prof. Green's research focuses on racial bias in workplace disputes - including labor negotiations and employment discrimination cases. Prof. Green also recently authored a chapter about negotiating while black.
* Public Reception. Symposium attendees and members of the community are welcome to join our public reception!

Campus Conversation with President Schill

Location

Guistina Ballroom, Ford Alumni Center

Reminder

30 minutes

Dear Campus Community,

The time and location of President Michael Schill's Campus Conversation has been changed to noon in the Giustina Ballroom at the Ford Alumni Center. The date of April 12 remains the same.

The venue and time change are designed to allow more people to participate, create less disruption to students in class, provide live web streaming, and create a better opportunity for questions and answers during the forum. We apologize for any inconvenience this schedule change may cause.

Again, the President's Campus Conversation is now at noon on Tuesday, April 12 in the Giustina Ballroom of the Ford Alumni Center. Live streaming will be available on the UO Channel during the event, and a video will be posted the day after the event.

All faculty, staff and students are invited to participate. More information about the forum is available on the Office of the President website.

Sincerely,
Office of the President
