How new meta-analysis methods can change the
“What Doesn't Work Clearinghouse” back to the What Works Clearinghouse

John Easton, the former Director of the Institute of Education Sciences, once quipped to the New York Times that the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) was more like the "What Doesn't Work Clearinghouse" because the WWC rarely found educational interventions with significant positive effects. This talk argues that the reason for Dr. Easton's frustration is that the methods the WWC uses for meta-analysis have low power, i.e. they are unlikely to find what works.
In the talk I review current WWC methodology, show that it has low power in practical use, and outline my current program of research on the meta-analysis of educational interventions. I show that my new methods have strictly greater power than those currently used by the WWC -- especially in the, unfortunately common, case of summarizing the results of a mixture of correctly and incorrectly analyzed studies.
