Dear Colleagues,
Education Studies is pleased to announce two opportunities for COE faculty and students to meet, Jennifer Ruef, candidate for our Mathematics Educator position.
She will be offering a colloquium and a teaching simulation. She is completing her doctoral work in Mathematics Education at Stanford University and is the recipient of the 2015 Equity Award from the Stanford Graduate School of Education.
Colloquium
when: Monday, Jan 25 from 1:30-2:30
where: Lokey 115
Title: The power of voice: Making sense of making sense of mathematics
How does a class of sixth grade students and their teacher co-construct a learning environment centered on making sense of mathematics? This talk shares evidence and analysis on how constructing a taken-as-shared understanding relates to issues of agency to share one's thinking and authority to validate an answer. When students and their teacher collaborate to build understanding, powerful learning is possible, and new productive practices and culture are one possible result.
Teaching simulation
when: Tuesday, Jan 26 from 10 to 11am
where: Lokey 115
