Dear Staff, Faculty, and Students,

I write today to announce the appointment of Dr. Krista Chronister as Assistant Dean for Equity and Inclusion. Krista, an Associate Professor of Counseling Psychology, is also an alumna, and thus very familiar with the history and current status of our college. She comes to this position uniquely qualified to help all us achieve our equity and inclusion goals.

With regard to inclusion, Krista has worked with us this summer to design programs to improve student retention. Our student diversity survey of last Spring confirmed that we had too many students who felt a lack of inclusion in their academic programs, and thus considered leaving. I am confident that Krista will help us improve student recruitment, retention, progression, and graduation; all key indicators of our progress toward an inclusive and equitable culture.

In addition, Krista's efforts will be focused on equitable and inclusive practices that improve faculty recruitment, retention, productivity, and promotion through the academic ranks. We know, for example, from Krista's work and others, that there is an evidentiary base related to faculty research productivity and institutional engagement, as she will share with you in her introductory email.

Equitable practices will also positively impact staff recruitment, retention, and productivity. One aspect of equitable treatment is access to communication, which is a hallmark of great places to work. Krista will help me achieve my goal of finding new avenues for greater involvement of staff members in the work of our institution. I have already taken some small steps, including requiring faculty search committees to add at least one student and one staff member.

I will work with Krista to develop a reasonable set of inclusion and equity goals, activities to achieve these goals, and metrics to measure our institutional progress. With Krista's leadership, and our improved practices that will result, we will become field leading, which will have tangible benefits for all members of our College.

Please join me in welcoming Krista and engaging with her in this important work.

Regards,

Randy
