COE faculty and staff,
As the year comes to a close I want to thank all of you that participated in the COE curriculum process as members of the Curricular Innovation Committee, COE Curriculum Committee, and as faculty members who commented and voted on curriculum courses and programs.  Below is an end of year update of a) spring curriculum activities, b) changes in timeline/calendar for curriculum actions for next year, and c) the need to clarify the COE curricular process and materials.
Spring Curriculum Activities
As required in the policy I wanted to let you now the final outcome of the recent curricular changes.
The following courses were approved to move forward to the UO CC:

1.       CPSY 610 to CPSY 634 Epidemiology - approved 23:0 with no substantive comments

2.       CPSY 610 to CPSY 635 Social Aspects of Behavior - approved 19:1 with no substantive comments

3.       CPSY 610 to CPSY 645 Health Psychology approved - 19:1 with no substantive comments


The three prevention Science Programs were approved by all levels of the UO (Graduate Council, Senate, Board of Trustees) and now move forward to the state level - the “Provosts’ Council” and the HECC.
Changes in Timeline/Calendar for Curriculum Actions
I have learned a lot about the curriculum process – the behind the scenes steps. So with that knowledge and the increase in the number of submission this year and rumors of others in the near future, I had a discussion with the COE Curriculum Committee about calendar changes to make the process work smoother.

1)      Course development/changes will be accepted for review and vote in the Fall and Winter term. Winter term seems to have the highest number of course submissions. Spring Term does not go forward to UOCC until their Fall meeting so we will not take any course changes during spring term. The exception to this is expedited course changes, which will be accepted each term as they do not need to go for faculty comment/vote.

2)      Program development/changes currently do not have a timeline. This resulted in confusion this year so I would like to establish one. The COE Curriculum Committee proposes that the synopses will be accepted in Fall term and full proposals in spring term.  The dates for submission will be set on the standard COE calendar for curriculum. This will eliminate the need for multiple faculty votes/comments per term. The faculty can then use winter term or the summer to develop the full proposal. Since there will be no course approvals in spring, the COE Curriculum Committee will be able to focus on these proposed programs and allow time for presentations during their meeting, etc.  Obviously, proposers can come to ask questions, etc. at the winter meeting and work with the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. The exception would be the FHS minor synopsis that was approved this spring will move forward, if ready, in Fall.



Clarity of COE Curricular Process and Materials

Last, I have had many of you comment about the challenge about knowing the process for and the content needed for submitting materials for curricular approval. I have talked with a number of people and am working with Shaun to clarify these materials. I have finished the Academic Extension materials and process and plan to work this summer on the course and program processes. Shaun has developed a new Curriculum webpage on the COE governance site.
