EMPL to bring rural education expert to UO
The Department of Educational Methodology, Policy, and Leadership in the College of Education will host a colloquium by Dr. Michael Corbett, the chair of the American Educational Research Association's special interest group on rural education. The colloquium will be held Tuesday, June 9 from 11:30 AM - 1 PM in HEDCO 230T. Lunch will be served.

[Michael-Corbett]Corbett is Professor of Rural and Remote Education at the University of Tasmania, a position he began recently after nearly two decades at Acadia University in Canada. He has conducted rural education research on four continents. He interrogates contemporary and historical conceptions of the rural, and how these conceptions have played into policy and discourse around social and economic development, education, teacher education, and literacies.

At UO, Corbett will present Wicked problems in rural social space: Complex education policy ecologies beyond the metropolis. He will consider rurality as a variable that is insufficiently problematized (or even ignored) in education policy discussions, which treat urban social spaces as normal. Secondly, he will argue for better quantitative and qualitative analysis of educational quality in non-metropolitan geographies. Finally, he will contend that struggles over small schools in changing rural communities represent an example of the kind of wicked problems that demand new and more democratic forms of policy discussion and governance.
