coe-staff: Senate Notes

Hi Colleagues -
I'm attaching my notes from the Senate meeting of April 8.  This was a remarkable meeting because Interim President Coltrane came before the Senate to tell us that we have been combative and hostile to his administration.  It was quite a surprise to me as I have seen nothing but respectful discourse, although at times, clear disagreements between the administration and the Senate. I admit up front that I am biased. I have seen the Senate and individual members drop everything to work very hard on a number of potential disasters, for example the Board of Trustees almost passed a Policy on Policies that excluded the Senate and the UO Constitution and the policies written by Risk Management to usurp the GTFF strike by removing Instructors of Record were a direct violation of commonly accepted standards of Academic Freedom. We've taken on a humongous task of analyzing Oregon Administrative Rules and OUS rules that pertain to academic and employment policies for the Board of Trustees.  There have been many additional Senate meetings that have always had a quorum.  So, as you will see from my notes, the discourse continued to be polite and respectful, but there was push back.  I think the dialog was very productive, as the next Senate meeting will actually occur in the President's formal residence.
