Dr. Ilana Umansky, Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Methodology, Policy and Leadership at the College of Education (EMPL)

Talk description:
This talk explores how immigrant students face inferior access to curricular content in middle school due to linguistic stratification in schools. Using data from a large, urban school district, the paper describes the course-taking patterns of students classified as English language learners (ELLs) and explores the multiple barriers to content that this population faces. The paper concludes with implications for policy and practice.
Brief bio:
Dr. Umansky received her doctorate from Stanford University in 2014. A current Spencer fellow and former Fulbright fellow, Ilana Umansky’s work focuses on quantitative and longitudinal analysis of the educational opportunities and outcomes of immigrant students and students classified as English language learners (ELLs). She studies ELL course-taking and access to core academic content, the effects of the ELL classification system, and how educational outcomes vary for students in different linguistic instructional environments. In her work, she collaborates with school districts and states as they work to improve educational opportunities for their ELL students.
