Dear Faculty and Staff,

I look forward to our first planning lunch tomorrow. As promised, tomorrow's meeting will be a free-flowing discussion that will inform our creation of various planning groups, committees, task forces, or other entities that help us identify important initiatives to move our institution forward. I am meeting with Lisa Mazzei next week to form focus groups, which will give us yet another means of coalescing our immense talent in the interest of creating ideas that inspire us to engage in planning efforts.

Many planning groups can and will be created. We do, however, have three that have already been working, or have expressed interest in getting started immediately. They are:

Group 1. Fiscal Analysis and Planning

Research Questions:

-How are collaboration, inclusion, innovation, equity, and mission reflected in our budget? In other words, is our spending aligned with our values and strategic priorities?
-What is the appropriate level of budgetary analysis; individual faculty, academic program area, department, or college? Does the unit of analysis depend on the question being asked? If so, what are the questions?

Sandi Cole
Malika Fitch
Nancy Heapes
Connie Manley
Kent McIntosh
Benedict McWhirter - Convener
Diane O’Keefe
Jerry Rosiek
Leslie Stephenson

Group 2. Curricular Innovation (e.g., Educational Gaming, Prevention, Student Athlete Development, Educational Journalism)

Research Questions:

-Can we leverage existing courses and faculty UO-wide to increase curricular options?
-How might we include student perspectives, particularly with regard to gauging their interest level, in our curricular planning?
-Should we deactivate or not admit students to academic programs with several years of less than desired enrollments?
-Should we offer courses, certifications, workshops, degree programs in Portland, or other cities (e.g., Hong Kong)?

Emily Cornell
Hank Fien
Brigid Flannery - Convener
Jeanne Hall
Leslie Leve
Ed Madison (Journalism)
Kathy Moxley-South
Alison Schmitke
Elizabeth Skowron

Undergraduate Student

Group 3. Web Site/On-Line Presence

Research Questions:

-Who are the audiences for, and what are the purposes of our web site?
-How does the web site relate to our other digital efforts in marketing, student recruitment, accreditation, donor development and relations, etc.?
-How do we keep all of our digital presence current?

Lisa Fortin
Shaun Haskins - Convener
Krissy Hemphill
Cody Pinkston
Jeff Woodbury
Yong Zhao

The research questions are mine. I expect the groups to generate additional questions, discard or use those that I offered, or create a new approach to their planning work.

Some of the additional groups that have generated interest among faculty include, 1) digital learning, 2) teacher education, 3) global/international education, 4) research, 5) dissemination and/or commercialization of COE faculty works, and 6) clinical community services. Shaun and I are already tallying names of volunteers for these groups. I will also work with Lisa Fortin and others to begin to fill the student slots on these committees.

After our meeting tomorrow I will work with Shaun to keep you updated on our groups and our progress.

Thanks for engaging in these efforts.

Regards,

Randy
